Words of Wisdom: Choose friends wisely

The word 'friend' makes us smile and brings about emotional satisfaction. Everyone needs a friend to talk to and share feelings with. Friends hold your hand in difficulties and rejoice with you in good times. A true friend will pick you up when you are down, and jump with you when sky is the limit.

Be discerning when choosing friends. Keep in mind that intelligent people talk about ideas; mediocre people talk about events, and ignorant ones talk about other people. Be in the company of those who talk about good ideas. Stay away from those who talk about other people. They will invariably talk about you also. Your relationship with them will be fraught with disappointment.

A friend may inspire you to become better than you are, or take you along on the wrong path. A good friend will advise you to do the right thing. A bad friend will laugh when he sees you involved in wrong activities such as skipping school, being rude and breaking the law. A good friend will step in and try to stop you.

Your friends will actively or silently influence your attitudes and decisions in life. If you are with those who consider themselves to be perpetual victims, you are likely to become more negative in your outlook on life. If you associate with those who are proactive, their enthusiasm will rub off on you.

If you are looking for friends, look for people who possess the qualities you admire. If you like integrity, honesty, loyalty and compassion, search for these qualities within the people you befriend.

Words of Wisdom: Trust God's Plan

One day a king was in the jungle along with his hunting party which included his trusted minister. While hunting the king and his minister became separated from others. As they were trying to navigate their way out of the jungle, the king became extremely thirsty. The minister searched and found a pond to drink from. Although the king was grateful for the water, he became annoyed when one of his fingers started bleeding due to being pricked by thorns. He was looking for sympathy from the minister, but the minister simply smiled and said, "God did well to do this." These words surprised the king and made him angry. However, he was relieved when he and his minister managed to join the rest of the hunting party. Soon they returned to the kingdom.

Once he was back in the palace, the king received medical care. His finger had become infected and had to be amputated. Once again the minister said, "God did well to do this." Now the king was beside himself with rage, and banished his minister to the dungeon.

A few days later the king went to the jungle once again; this time without his minister. He got lost in the jungle and found himself alone. It was not long before he was captured by some primitive men. These men had been searching for a human to sacrifice, and they had found him. However, they needed someone whose body was without cuts and wounds. When they saw one of the king's fingers missing, they set him free.

Finding his way back to the kingdom, the king went straight to the minister in the dungeon and apologized. Relating his story he said, "I am so sorry for subjecting you to hardships of living in this dungeon." The minister replied, "God did well to do this." The king was puzzled and asked how it was good that the minister had spent many days in the dark dungeon.

The minister replied, "O king! If I had been with you, I would have lost my life today. Your captors would have sacrificed me instead."

The king now understood that God's plan should always be trusted.

Words of Wisdom: Get rid of your sorrows

There is a deep-seated sorrow within our heart. We all try to get rid of it one way or another. Some go shopping and surround themselves with things to find relief. Some turn to chain smoking, alcohol and drugs. Some go on a vacation. But these treatments do not seem to help. The void keeps getting bigger. The sorrow keeps growing.

The reason behind our sadness is that we have gotten away from our true nature. We are spiritual beings trying to find fulfillment through material things. We must understand who we truly are and to whom we belong.

We are a combination of Body and Soul. For the purpose of the body we need things of the material world. Who can deny the importance of food, water, clothing and shelter? We need material things to satisfy the needs of the material body. Why do we forget that we are the divine soul, which is an eternal energy of the Supreme? Only God can fulfill the soul, not the material world.

Never mind that most people are running towards the world and worldly things to find satisfaction. Observe them and see if they are receiving what they truly want. A content individual is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least. Use the world only as much as you need for the fulfillment of basic needs. Take a look at God who is all-pervading. Pay attention to Him, and He will surely take away the sorrow and suffering from your heart.

Words of Wisdom: Reminders are important

We get many reminders daily. The doctor’s office sends us a reminder when it’s time for a checkup. The dentist’s office reminds us every six months to come for the routine cleaning. The electric and water company issues reminders that the bills must be paid by such-and-such-a-date. Many wonder why God does not send such reminders. The fact is that God’s reminders come to us in many forms.

When the hair starts to turn grey, God reminds us that old age is fast approaching. There once lived a very holy king in India. Seeing the grey hair around the temples reminded him to retire to the peace and quiet of the woods to practice meditation on God. We too see the grey hair, and we too take immediate action. We rush to the pharmacy to purchase hair color and hide the grey.

When teeth start falling out, we should realize that God is reminding us to eat less. What we do instead is to get dentures and tooth implants so that we may eat what we have been eating.

Failing eyesight is a reminder that we should control the yearning to read trivial books and magazines, and to read only that leads to our ultimate goal.

Failing memory is a reminder for us to remember only the good and to forget the bad. After all, we would not want the bad thoughts to travel with us to the next life.

Fading looks are a reminder that external beauty is fleeting, and that we should try diligently to beautify the mind.

Various aches and pains remind us that we will have to renounce the ever-aging physical body.

We must pay attention to these and more reminders from God.

Wisdom of Bhagavad Geeta

* Just as a person discards old garments and puts on new clothes, so does the soul take on a new body, discarding the old one.

* God accepts a leaf, a flower, a fruit or even water if offered with love.

* The soul cannot be cut by weapons, burnt by fire, melted by water or withered by the wind.

* Desire, Anger and Greed are three gates leading to hell.

* It is difficult to control the mind, but it can be done with practice.

* Perform your duty efficiently and without attachment to the results.

* The soul is an eternal fraction of God.

* Balance in life is created if one eats neither too little nor too much; and sleeps neither too little nor too much.

* Just as a lamp burns steadily without flickering in a calm place, the mind of the individual remains calm without getting agitated if he has controlled his desires.


* Meditating on God without name and form is difficult for embodied beings.

Words of Wisdom: God Loves You

Love is a word we have borrowed from the divine realm. God loves us. He says in the scripture Ramayan, “I lovingly take care of you like a mother takes care of her newborn.” Even though the mother’s love is the closest that comes to true love, yet it’s not completely selfless. God’s love is.

He shows His love for you in so many ways. Take some time to reflect on this fact. Who created your body within the body of your mother? It was God! Who provided nourishment when you were hanging upside down in the mother’s womb? God! Who created milk within the mother’s body so that you wouldn’t starve to death? God! Who created grains, lentils, vegetables and fruits for your consumption? Again; it was God.

While loving His countless children simultaneously, He loves you individually. He sits in your heart, taking note of all your thoughts. Without your asking Him to do it, He provides fruits of all your actions. He rewards you for your goodness and punishes you for breaking His laws. Even His punishment is an act of love towards you. He is not a stern God; He is a loving and merciful God. His mercy flows continuously for you. His stock of forgiveness never ends for you.

There is not a single moment that goes by where He is not gazing lovingly at you. He doesn’t even blink His eyes. He has waited an eternity to rush into His outstretched arms, and He will continue to wait. Even when you forget all about Him, He doesn’t forget you. That’s how much He loves you.

Love Him like a Lord and Master. Love Him like your Mother and Father. Love Him like your Best Friend. Love Him like your Child. Love Him like your most precious Beloved. Love Him so much that your eyes long to see Him, and your heart yearns to be with Him.

Words of Wisdom: Keep an Open Mind

From my travels I have learnt to appreciate the differences amongst people that inhabit the world. Visiting different countries, I have seen that people and the customs they follow are immensely interesting. It’s important to accept that the way we do things is not the only way of doing things; it’s just one of the ways. Thinking in this manner we can learn so much more, and in the process, we become more tolerant. I read somewhere that our mind and a parachute are similar in the sense that they both work only when open. So true this is!

You don’t have to go around the world to see that people are different from one another; just look at your own family. Everyone is such an individual. Make a genuine attempt to see the other’s point of view. Though we usually say in conversations, “I see,” yet we don’t really see. We don’t even try to see. Why does my wife behave the way she does? Why is my child saying and doing what he is doing? What is my mother really trying to say to me? What is my best friend communicating with me? We are not able to reach the summit of Tolerance because we don’t work hard enough to conquer the two hills called "Preconceived Notion" and "Misconception".

Try to see the world with someone else’s eyes.
