Wednesday night at Main Line Unitarian Church: the Main Line Singers in one room, Shakespeare in the Fireside Gallery, Jazz and Joe in the McGinness Room. Music Director David Brown grabbed a camera and went room to room. It’s a lot going on, and that’s a normal Wednesday here.

Cabaret Night is Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. Show tunes! A one-woman opera! Puppets! A little Midsummer Night’s Dream! Free, so bring everybody. Details on our website.

We had so much going on after the service yesterday that the MLUC Theatre Group took its rehearsal outside. They were working on a hilarious opening number for its first-ever Cabaret Night. It’s Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. Free. Bring your friends.

Inside, our teens took on another monster in Role-Playing Adventure. And in the McGinness Room, Justin Solonynka sat down at the piano for a concert of jazz-tinged rock, oddball covers, and originals.

Meanwhile, Starting Point, our introductory class to Unitarian Universalism, met for the second time. And Rabbi Robyn Frisch led the first session of Healing After Loss, a workshop for anyone grieving or anticipating the loss of a pet. The second session is Sunday, Nov. 8, and you’re welcome even if you missed the first.

Haugtussa Reclaimed is a dramatized musical retelling of Arne Garborg’s Haugtussa, a clairvoyant young woman’s coming-of-age story, with Edvard Grieg’s song cycle of the same name at its center. Haugtussa Reclaimed expands the truncated narrative of Grieg’s 8-song cycle—piecing together Garborg’s larger, more empowered tale by adding thematically relevant works by Grieg—and serves as an even fuller showcase of Grieg’s nationalistic Romanticism. In venturing beyond the love story that comprises the bulk of Grieg’s setting, Haugtussa Reclaimed rounds out the protagonist’s full supernatural journey as depicted in its source material while also strengthening her agency, and attempts to rebuild Grieg’s Haugtussa as it might have been: a more theatrical experience that grapples with themes of good and evil, finding oneself, and the choices we make along the way.
