Friends, the Unity Group is issuing the following release concerning the status of the annual Juneteenth Parade:
May 28th, 2026
Cc: Juneteenth Parade is only Pedestrian Driven
Dear Members, Friends and Community Supporters:
The Unity Group is providing an update concerning the 5th Annual Juneteenth National Freedom Day Parade. Last year, we publicly stated our intent to continue the annual parade in 2026, and began preparations for this year’s event several months ago.
We believed that we had been presented with all the necessary requirements by the City of Chattanooga Office of Special Events and the Risk Management Division in order to hold the parade, as we have successfully done during both the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Juneteenth celebrations for six decades. Since that time, we have worked diligently to complete all compliance requirements in good faith.
Unexpectedly, within the last day, it has been conveyed to us that there will be no vehicles or transportation of any kind permitted in the annual parade.
This development is unfortunate because the annual parades have traditionally included a wide range of vehicles and transportation support, including Volkswagen’s newest vehicle editions, first responder vehicles, antique cars, mobile radio broadcast, student es**rt vehicles, and transportation assistance for elderly and disabled participants, including CARTA bus accommodations.
As it has now been relayed to us, vehicles will not be permitted for the foreseeable future, and the parades will become strictly pedestrian-driven events.
Regretfully, it would have been our preference that these additional restrictions had been communicated to us by the City of Chattanooga Office of Special Events and the Risk Management Division when we first announced our intent to continue the parade last year, rather than in the eleventh hour after months of planning and preparation.
Notwithstanding, for the last several years during the planning of both the Juneteenth and MLK parade, there has been increased regulatory requirements to comply with. While we are in full agreement for the need for safety, and understand inflation has driven up the cost of most goods and commodities, it is our view that many of these enhanced stipulations have created undue hardship and been done in a manner that is in stark contrast to the meaning of, “cooperative spirit.”
Further, the Unity Group has increasingly been asked to bear the expense of these annual parades alone. To some, that may be an afterthought, but there was a time in our history when events that celebrated unity, heritage, and community received meaningful support and partnership.
This has prompted many within our community to express to us that both the MLK and Juneteenth parades should warrant the same level of support and investment afforded to events such as Ironman, Nightfall, and MainX24.
Despite these challenges, we remain committed to honoring the legacy, history, and spirit of Juneteenth and will continue evaluating the best path forward for our community during both the annual Juneteenth and MLK Parade planning processes.
Yours in Abundance,
Unity Group of Chattanooga
