OPENING MUSIC “Hymne” by Evangelos O. Papathanassiou (Vangelis)

Penny Cameron, piano arr. by Lori Line

During the opening music, let us quiet the noise from outside, cease our conversation with the world, and begin

listening for the music of God’s voice.

CALL TO WORSHIP
One: God speaks peace to the faithful, to those who turn to God in their hearts.
All: Surely salvation is at hand for those who fear God.
One: Where God dwells, steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other.
All: Faithfulness springs up from the ground and righteousness looks down from the sky. God gives what
is good and we respond with abundant praise!
*PURPLE HYMNAL #463 “How Firm a Foundation” (v. 1-3)
ANNOUNCEMENTS
OPENING PRAYER & INVITATION TO CONFESSION
UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God our refuge, you hear our cries for mercy. You know our exhaustion, our cynicism, our sense of
defeat. You lift the lowly and offer hope to the hopeless. But we are quick to lose perspective and
exaggerate critique. We confess the ways we are tempted to give up on the path of righteousness. We
pray for your forgiveness. Amen.
SILENT PRAYER
ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Isaiah 43:1)
*THE GLORIA: Glory to the Creator, and to the Christ, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
*THE PEACE OF CHRIST
Leader: Peace be with you. People: And also with you.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
SCRIPTURE
Immediately [Jesus] made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed
the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening
came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind
was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw
him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. But immediately
Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you,
command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the
water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to
sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You
of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped
him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Matthew 14:22-33, The New Revised Standard Version
The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from a Brief Statement of Faith)
We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace
through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with
all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and
apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed,
claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls
women and men to all ministries of the Church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage
to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries
in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice,
freedom, and peace.

THE OFFERING
OFFERTORY “It is Well with My Soul” by Philip Bliss

Penny Cameron, piano

*DOXOLOGY: Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise
God above, ye heavenly host; Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Gracious God, the gifts we offer reflect only a portion of all that you have given us. Take these offerings,
we pray, and multiply them for your use. May our offerings be a blessing to those most in need, to those
most vulnerable. May our offerings, given in a spirit of generosity, abate the desire to hoard, and spread
the desire to share. Amen.

INVITATION TO GOD’S TABLE
GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise... Therefore with all creation we sing your praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the
highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
LORD’S PRAYER As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
BREAKING OF THE BREAD
The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.
