Partnering with Helen Keller International, BGR is expanding a vital nutrition program to 57 new health centers in Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire. By providing nutritional training and cooking demonstrations to mothers, this project will directly benefit over 20,000 women and 10,000 children this year, protecting vulnerable infants during their first 1,000 days of life.

Lotus Outreach International (LOI), a BGR partner since 2009, works to improve the lives of women and girls in Cambodia through initiatives that increase girlsโ€™ access to education. LOIโ€™s Cambodian Tertiary Education and Leadership Youth Training (CATALYST) program supports qualified high school graduates from some of the poorest families in rural Cambodia as they continue their education.

Support from BGR helps cover the costs of school supplies, professional development and capacity building workshops, mentoring, counseling, books, and course fees. By facilitating access to higher education, the program activates the social and economic potential of young women at the margins, empowering them to become agents of social change and providing the emotional support and mentorship they need to successfully pursue their goals and dreams. These women serve as role models for future generations, and combat harmful class and gender norms on a societal level. This year, the project will support scholarships for thirteen young women.

Across Cameroon, the number of women, girls, and youths who survive on less than a dollar per day continues to increase in both urban and rural areas. Across the Southwest Region, women who have been the victims of s*xual and/or domestic violence report experiencing economic deprivation, stigmatization, and a lack of vocational opportunities. Additionally, humanitarian and health crises have increased the number of unemployed women heads of households; as a consequence, many abandoned single mothers, girls who have dropped out of school, and marginalized poor widows who are unable to feed their children have resorted to illegal s*x work in order to survive.

Our partner in this project, the Centre for Community Regeneration and Development (CCREAD-Cameroon), provides vocational education and training to these women and other women and youths in need. CCREADโ€™s training center, constructed in 2017 with BGR funding, trains women and girls each year in tailoring and clothing design; hairdressing and cosmetology; weaving; agricultural processing; and catering and pastry production. The programs last for a full year, during which time participants and their children also receive free meals at the center. At the completion of their training, graduates receive seed capital and ongoing mentoring as they move forward in their careers. This yearโ€™s project is expected to directly benefit approximately 650 people.

For the rural poor of Tamil Nadu, India, access to educational resources is often financially untenable. Fees for books, uniforms, transportation, and food are difficult for households to afford, particularly in support of what many families consider to be a long-term investment with abstract benefits.

This project with BGR partner Lotus Outreach International provides nutritional support for students and staff members at the Garden of Peace school, located on a 5.6-acre organic farm just outside of Kurumbupalayam Village in Tamil Nadu. Garden of Peace offers a holistic educational program that provides its enrollees with a traditional primary school curriculum as well as English and Tamil courses, and training in meditation and philosophies of nonviolence. BGR support funds two nutritious daily meals and a healthy snack for all students. The nutritional component is fundamental to the schoolโ€™s identity, as the facilities are situated on an organic farm. The students and their parents are involved in farm activities, helping to grow a portion of the food served to the students. This year, the school expects to serve 220 children, in addition to teachers and community volunteers.
