Today, the Church celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the joyful beginning of the life of the woman chosen by God to bring His Son into the world.

From the moment of her birth, Mary was prepared for a unique mission. Through her faithful "yes" to God's plan, she became the Mother of our Savior and continues to be a loving Mother to all who turn to her in faith.

On this feast of Mary's Nativity, may Our Blessed Mother renew your hope, strengthen your faith, and fill your heart with the peace that comes from Christ.

O Mary Conceived Without Sin, Pray for Us who Have Recourse to Thee!

Today, September 5, we celebrate the life of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, affectionately known to many of us as Mother Teresa.

This humble woman, renowned and beloved all over the world, received a special calling from God to be His missionary to the poorest of the poor. She founded the Missionaries of Charity and became recognized internationally as a humanitarian and religious leader, working tirelessly to give hope and love to the poor and dying, the homeless, orphans, lepers, victims of AIDS, and the lonely.

Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997 and was canonized on September 4, 2016 by Pope Francis. May we, like Saint Teresa of Calcutta, recognize the image of God in every human person we encounter, remembering the words of Jesus: “...whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Mt. 25:40)

The Diocese of Phoenix has launched a rebranded, mobile-friendly digital platform for The Catholic Sun, creating a single digital destination for local, national and global Catholic news. The new site at catholicsun.org includes an innovative partnership with OSV News, a Catholic news service that provides real-time news updates, a Vatican News widget and a new weekly video series to enhance digital evangelization.

The launch eliminates the need for faithful to navigate multiple platforms for information and spiritual enrichment. By integrating local diocesan storytelling, a diverse library of short- and long-form video programming and live Vatican and U.S. coverage, the Diocese of Phoenix has consolidated everything into one comprehensive, mobile-friendly hub.

Today, August 29, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist. Having honored the Nativity of Saint John earlier on June 24, the Church also honors his martyrdom; the only other individual apart from Our Lord and our Blessed Mother who we commemorate their birth and death.

As we learn from the Gospel reading for today (Mark 6: 17-29), Saint John's martyrdom resulted from his refusal to acknowledge King Herod's immoral relationship with his sister-in-law, Herodias. Having offended Herodias by his condemnation of her relationship with Herod, Saint John was eventually imprisoned but not killed outright because Herod sensed he was a holy man and held both a fear and fascination of him. However, upon witnessing Herodias's daughter dance for his guests one evening, Herod promised the girl whatever she wished. She consulted her mother and ultimately called for Saint John's death by beheading.

From the beginning of his ministry and up until his death, Saint John's vocation was characterized as that of one "crying out in the desert [to] prepare the way of the Lord" (Mt 3:3). Through his dedication and advocacy of the truth and desire for all people to focus their hearts back towards God, Saint John the Baptist faithfully followed this call to holiness and inspires each of us to follow Christ wholeheartedly.
