Heart opening

While visiting former American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander at Tel Aviv’s Sourasky Hospital this morning, US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff gifted the 21-year-old a necklace that had belonged to Witkoff’s son, Andrew, who died at a young age, Channel 12 reports.

In a gesture that “moved Edan’s family to tears,” Witkoff handed over the keepsake — which the envoy had worn himself for two and a half decades — to Alexander, a day after helping secure his freedom from Hamas, the network says.

“You would be doing a great honor to my son if you keep wearing this,” Witkoff reportedly told Alexander, as he placed the necklace around the dual national’s neck.

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810) a great-grandson of the Baal Shem Tov was Chassidic Rebbe, who although controversial in his time, has gained great popularity in Israel today. Known for his emphasis on joy, personal prayer and his pronounced antinomianism, his teachings weave together mystical, contemplative, devotional, embodiment and shamanistic modes of serving Hashem. In this class we'll be opening his magnum-opus, Likutey Moharan from the very beginning and delve into his teaching seeking meaningful guidance in deepening our connection with Hashem and growing as individuals and in community.

About Rabbi Barya Schachter

Rabbi Barya Schachter, grew up in the Jewish Renewal movement as it coalesced around his father, Reb Zalman and received Orthodox Semicha from Rabbi Riskin of Efrat after spending nine years studying in Israel. A modern Breslever Chassid, he strives to draw on the experiential piety of Hasidut in order to face the challenges of the contemporary world. He sees halacha more as instructions for shamanic rights rather than a system of law, and as such particularly enjoys DIY mitzvah projects like doing his own Shechita, making homemade Matzah and tying Tzitzit. Striving to integrate his experiences with martial arts, football and alternative medicine, he approaches Torah and prayer with an eye towards embodiment practice as an emerging modality in serving Hashem.
