Forest Rest Natural Cemetery

Forest Rest Natural Cemetery Leave a smaller, greener footprint. Natural burial was actually the common method of burial used until the mid-1800s in the United States.

It is widely practiced in other cultures but is only regaining interest in America. Forest Rest Natural Cemetery is a member of the Evergreen Memorial Trust. It is the only natural burial location of its type within a hundred plus miles in every direction. Natural burial employs no chemical embalming, no vault, and no expensive casket. Internment options include a biodegradable linen shroud, wicke

r or plain wooden box or a favorite blanket. Burial can take a heavy toll on a family’s emotions and finances. These options minimize a burial “footprint” on the environment. And, for families, many of the major costs of “traditional” funerals/burials are eliminated. Another carbon-emission reducing step is the family’s option for the gravesite to be dug by hand. At Forest Rest, in order to sustain the natural setting, elaborate grave markers are shunned. If families wish to have a marker for site identification, these usually consist of simple memorial sentiments etched into stones natural to the grounds.

What tree would you be? For families seeking a natural and meaningful form of remembrance, Evergreen Memorial Trust proudly offers the Be-A-Tree program at multiple EMT properties throughout our region.

Be-A-Tree allows cremated remains to become part of a living tree, creating a lasting connection to nature while providing families with a peaceful place for remembrance and reflection. Many people find comfort in knowing that life continues to grow through beautiful landscapes filled with trees, wildlife, changing seasons, and natural beauty. Each tree can also carry special meaning. An oak tree often symbolizes strength, endurance, and family legacy. A dogwood can represent peace, renewal, and grace. A maple tree is often connected to balance, beauty, and the changing seasons of life. Choosing a tree can become a deeply personal reflection of the life and values of a loved one.

This unique memorial option reflects a growing desire for simplicity, environmental stewardship, and a return to nature while still providing a permanent and dignified place of remembrance for future generations. What tree would you be?

At Evergreen Memorial Trust, we are honored to offer memorial choices that reflect the personal values, wishes, and traditions of the families we serve across Roanoke, Vinton, Boones Mill, and Buena Vista.

On May 14, 1607, (419 years ago today) English settlers arrived at Jamestown Settlement and established the first permanent English colony in North America. Life was harsh from the beginning. Disease, hunger, and conflict took a heavy toll, and the need for a burial ground came quickly.

The colony’s first cemetery, now known as the churchyard burial ground, was established within the walls of the original fort. Archaeological work has uncovered graves believed to belong to some of Jamestown’s earliest leaders and settlers, offering a rare and powerful glimpse into the realities of early American life and loss.

From the very beginning, one truth has remained. Every life deserves a place of dignity, permanence, and remembrance.

At Evergreen Memorial Trust, we carry that same commitment forward for the families we serve today. Gone Is Gone. Make sure your loved one’s final resting place is certain, secure, and never left to chance.

During excavation of the fort at Jamestown, thirty graves were found. These are most likely the men who died during the first year of the settlement.
