“Your best is not enough; your worst is never too much.”
Jesus encounters people from opposite ends of the spectrum: Nicodemus, a respected and religious man whose goodness cannot replace his need for Jesus, and the Samaritan woman, a socially rejected and broken woman whose past cannot repel Jesus. Through both encounters, John reveals that Jesus is full of grace and truth, offering new spiritual life to those who cannot earn it and living water to those who cannot satisfy their deepest thirst. Our achievements, morality, relationships, possessions, and pursuits of significance cannot ultimately fulfill us. The gospel offers something radically different: Jesus provides what we cannot provide for ourselves. Through his substitutionary death on the cross, where he himself thirsted, he brings lasting satisfaction, forgiveness, and a restored relationship with God. The invitation is to stop relying on our goodness or hiding behind our brokenness and instead look to Jesus, who knows us completely and loves us fully.

“In God’s promises, there will be a day you will never fear for lack, for life, or for love.”
Isaiah 24–25 gives us a sobering but ultimately hopeful picture of God’s character and His plan for the world. God is holy, just, and sovereign, so human rebellion against Him has real consequences—both now and in the final judgment. Yet God’s judgment is not His delight; it is His “strange work,” while grace and redemption are central to His character. Isaiah therefore gives us both a sure pronouncement of judgment and a sure promise of redemption. God promises a future feast for all nations, the destruction of death, the wiping away of every tear, and the reconciliation of God with His people. The question is where we will place our trust: in wealth, power, relationships, accomplishments, religion, or other human “strongholds,” or in Christ, our true refuge. For those who are in Christ, the judgment we deserve has already fallen upon Jesus at the cross, freeing us to celebrate God, wait patiently with confident hope, and hide ourselves in Him.

The hope of the gospel is this: God brings spiritual renewal to the places that are most ruined."
Isaiah 6 shows us that real change is possible because God brings spiritual renewal to people in the midst of spiritual ruin. Isaiah encounters the living, holy God and, rather than seeing himself as better than others, becomes painfully aware of his own sin and brokenness. Yet God does not leave him there: through the sacrifice symbolized by the burning coal, Isaiah's guilt is taken away and his sin atoned for. This points forward to Jesus, who takes upon himself the guilt and shame of Adam and bears God's judgment at the cross so that those who trust in him can be forgiven and renewed. The passage therefore calls us to stop placing our ultimate hope in the temporary "painted glories" of the world—success, reputation, relationships, comfort, money, or even our own efforts—and instead fix our eyes on the living King, whose redeeming grace brings real hope and real renewal.

“Whatever it is that you chase after...it will always be merciless to you.”
Isaiah 1 exposes the human tendency to seek salvation everywhere except God—either through self-indulgence and personal satisfaction or through self-righteousness and religious performance. Both are forms of misplaced trust. God is revealed as our Creator, covenant Lord, holy Judge, and Father, and our sin is shown to be both rebellion against His authority and rejection of His love. Yet Isaiah's message is not only an indictment but an invitation: God promises to cleanse those whose sins are scarlet and make them white as snow. That promise is ultimately fulfilled in Christ, who bears our sin and provides the righteousness and cleansing we cannot achieve ourselves. The proper response is therefore to stop trusting ourselves and trust Christ alone, allowing His grace not only to save us but to transform the way we live.

“I want my fruit to grow on other people’s trees.”
The sermon asks a simple but profound question from Acts 11:23: “What do people see when they come into our church?” Barnabas entered Antioch and “saw the grace of God,” prompting the challenge that the evidence of God’s grace should be visible in a healthy gospel-centered church. Grace is not something the church manufactures; it is something we continually receive from Jesus and then multiply outward. Because grace is embodied in Christ, churches must repeatedly encounter Jesus through the rhythms of worship, prayer, fasting, Scripture, and the sacraments. But that encounter should produce visible fruit: a willingness to speak both truth and grace to one another, a recognition and mobilization of the diverse gifts Jesus has given his people, and a generous willingness to release people and resources for God’s mission. Antioch demonstrates all three—practicing the rhythms of grace, mobilizing the gifts of Christ, and releasing resources with Christ’s generosity. The ultimate motivation isn't duty or willpower but the experience of Jesus' own generosity toward us. The sermon closes with the memorable vision that “my fruit would grow on other people’s trees”—that our lives, gifts, generosity, and ministry would bear fruit beyond ourselves because we have encountered the grace of Jesus.

“We can delight in the divine shadows, but we're really desperate for the divine substance.”
Psalm 19 shows us that God has given us two books—the book of nature and the book of Scripture—through which He reveals Himself. Creation displays God’s cosmic power, beauty, order, and glory, but it is only a shadow pointing to the Creator; Scripture reveals God’s holy expectations, but the law cannot make us righteous or provide the forgiveness we need. Both creation and the law ultimately leave us looking for something—or Someone—greater. David therefore cries out for God to declare him innocent and ends by calling God his “rock and my Redeemer.” On this side of the cross, we know the substance behind those shadows: Jesus Christ. We should therefore enjoy and steward creation without worshipping it, read Scripture not merely for information but to encounter God, and allow both the beauty and limitations of creation and the law to drive us deeper into our dependence on Christ.
