Creation Tide and What it Means to Be Human

- The Growing Children's Ministry at Trinity

This Sunday we begin Creation Season, a growing liturgical observation around the world. It began when the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (Eastern Orthodox) proposed in 1989 that September 1st (the first day of the Orthodox Church year) should be observed as a day “of protection of the natural environment”. In 2016, Pope Francis declared 1 September an annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This was expanded in Europe to be a season — Creation tide — going from September 1st until October 4th (the Feast of St Francis), and has been adopted in many churches around the world, including some in the Anglican Communion.

This year we will be asking what it means to be a human being: what does it mean both to be wired for eternity, with a deep spirit and soul, and at the same time, to be embodied and have our senses and our bodily functions communicate so much to us?

Do Not Fear, I am With You
Upcoming events for August, on our news page! (link in bio)

“Do you know what the most frequent command in the Bible turns out to be? What instruction, what order, is given, again and again, by God, by angels, by Jesus, by prophets and apostles? What do you think—‘Be good’? ‘Be holy, for I am holy’? Or, negatively, ‘Don’t sin’? ‘Don’t be immoral’? No. The most frequent command in the Bible is: ‘Don’t be afraid.’ Don’t be afraid. Fear not. Don’t be afraid…”
-N.T. Wright, Following Jesus: Biblical Reflections on Discipleship.

Prayer/Response:
Father, you are good — so good that you did not leave us alone on this earth. You left us your Spirit to guide us. Because of your Spirit, I never have to feel alone or afraid. You are with me always.
Amen.

These past few weeks in the Crowell Chapel have been wonderful. We are so grateful that so many of us can be together in this lovely space.

This week we continue our walk through the comforting passages of Isaiah as we are reminded,
“…a bruised reed he will not break,
and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.
He will not grow faint or be crushed
until he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his teaching…”

We hope you can us tomorrow morning in Manchester by the Sea at the Crowell Chapel.

Created in Love,
“When we see heaven meeting earth, when we see that we are logoi, created in love by the Logos, it will shape our perspectives on pretty much everything: what constitutes a good life; what a human being is; what the earth and all her beings are and are worth; what life is for; even who God is...indeed the whole of being is an infinite web in which we are an interdependence in symbiotic relationship…”

“The first precondition of being called a spiritual leader is to perceive and feel the falsehood that is prevailing in society, and then to dedicate one’s life to a struggle against that falsehood. If one tolerates the falsehood and resigns oneself to it, one can never become a prophet. If one cannot rise above material life, one cannot even become a citizen in the Kingdom of the Spirit, far less a leader of others.”

Her parents, anxious for her well-being, intervened and took her to the coast of Portugal for a rest. Ever the independent spirit, she diverted from the normal tourist sites and instead found her own way, alone, to a little fishing village between Porto and Viana do Castelo. It was there she was, for the first time, stung to the heart by the beauty of prayer.

One night in her time there, under the moonlight, she observed the procession for the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The fishermen's wives were making a candle-lit pilgrimage of the ships to pray over and bless them, singing what she described as "ancient hymns of a heart-rending sadness." Moved to her core, she had an insight: "Christianity is preeminently the religion of slaves." It was the first seed of the gospel sown deep into the fertile soil of her soul.

“The Lord’s Prayer is Manifesto: The Three Dimensions of Jesus's Sacred Revolution" by Tim Clayton
