“So you think we should have just waited until Iran had the capabilities and nuked us?” It struck me how beautifully this comment sums up where the evangelical church seems to live. It betrays a complete lack of prophetic imagination. For some, it’s just this simple, black and white, good and bad, either/or, we kill them or they’ll kill us. It’s a pre-emptive eye for an inevitable eye and we can’t imagine any other way than violence and this kind of pre-retribution.

It is officially out today!

"In many churches, the powerful work of the Holy Spirit is under-emphasized, given a polite nod, a roll of the eyes, or ignored altogether. All the while, Jesus expresses a clear and radical expectation that Holy Spirit power will be operating in those who follow him, and that, without such power, we won't be able to bear witness to anything close to the fullness of his saving reality.

Somewhere along the way, we came to believe in Jesus' saving power and forgiveness, and we look forward to heaven. Yet, between our initial salvation and heaven, we are mainly operating in our own wisdom, trying not to sin, and following Jesus in our own strength. We are tired, bored, disillusioned, and possibly despairing. We may be wondering if this is all there is. We are longing for more."

Over the years, I've noticed that many mainstream churches seem to have little or no theology of the Holy Spirit. On the other end of the spectrum, many charismatic and Pentecostal churches have an experience of the Holy Spirit, but also lack a theology of the Spirit. In this book, I invite you to encounter a theology of the Holy Spirit that will lead you to experience the Holy Spirit.
