Fuel the Mission. Become a Monthly Mission Partner.

Viking Catholic exists to help young adults in Whatcom County come to know and love the Lord. Through prayer, formation, fellowship, Mass, Adoration, Confession, discipleship, and community, students are given a place to encounter Christ and grow in their faith.

Your monthly gift of $25 or $50 helps sustain this mission and ensures that every young adult who walks through our doors has a place to belong, be formed, and be sent out to share the Gospel.

Please prayerfully consider becoming a Monthly Mission Partner today.

What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. Lent is a 40-day season of prayer, fasting and giving that Catholics and some Christians observe. It is a time of repentance and closeness to God in preparation for Easter.

On this special day of reflection, Catholics wear ashes in the shape of a cross on their foreheads. The ashes symbolize our mortality – “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” The ashes are also symbolic of sorrow and repentance for our sins.

We have all failed to love God and others as we should. Lent provides an opportunity to reflect, pray and repent for our sins. In doing so, many people make sacrifices or commit to life changes throughout the 40 days of Lent. It’s a time for spiritual fasting that helps us cleanse our souls, renew our faith, and grow closer to God.

During Mass on Ash Wednesday, priests will place a cross made of ashes on our foreheads. You do not need to be Catholic to receive ashes—people of all faiths are welcome to participate

Meet Erik, a FOCUS missionary! His favorite Saints are Damien of Molokai, Rose of Lima, and Martin de Porres! His favorite food is ceviche and fun fact: he can snap without using his thumb! He became a missionary because he wanted to share his life as a husband and father with students and young adults. Meet Anna! Her favorite food is pot roast and her favorite saint is St. Therese of Lisieux. She became a PM becase she wanted to do for incoming students what Viking Catholic did for her such as: providing spiritual formation, true friends that really care about you, and a warm and welcoming community. Her fun fact is that she has in Mexico for 4 months. She is looking forward to putting herself through a treacherous lent, and growing closer to God.

Meet Kamila! She’s a Junior at WWU studying Marine and Coastal Science; with her degree she hopes to become a lab technician. Her favorite animal is a Siphonophores because they are marine individuals that can come together and form a colony. Kamila was born in Hawaii and moved to Colorado when she was 16. The biggest plot twist of her life was “becoming Catholic” and the best part about becoming Catholic for her is understanding the love that Jesus has for us. Her favorite saint is Saint Joan of Arc. Kamila’s goal for this year is to talk to new people about Catholicism.
