Stories to Sustain the Q***r Soul
When q***r and trans people come into being in the world, we often do so with little to no connection to the q***r and trans ancestors who have come before us, especially our ancestors in faith. We are cut off from the stories of our trans and q***r histories β sometimes intentionally, and sometimes simply because the stories arenβt circulating in our communal sphere. With absented pasts, we often have difficulty imagining possibilities of persisting in the present or striving for flourishing futures. We need the stories of our trans and q***r pasts to survive and thrive in a present often intent on our erasure. And we need narratives of futurist possibility to resist the traumatic temporalities that limit potential futures.
The Rev. Cody J. Sanders, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Congregational and Community Care Leadership at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN. An ordained Baptist minister (Alliance of Baptists & American Baptist Churches), he previously served as a parish pastor in Cambridge, MA, where he was also American Baptist chaplain at Harvard and an LGBTQ-speicific chaplain at MIT. He has published a number of books, including, Spiritual Care First Aid: An All-Hands Approach for Church and Community (Fortress, 2025), Christianity, LGBTQ Su***de, and the Souls of Q***r Folk (Lexington, 2020), and A Brief Guide to Ministry with LGBTQIA Youth (Westminster John Knox, 2017, with a revised edition coming out in the Spring). Originally from South Carolina, Cody now lives in Minnesota with his partner, also named Cody, and their dog Suzie. Cody
