A Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple located in the Auburn, Washington Valley

www.wrbt.org White River Buddhist Temple was established over a hundred years ago.

Its founders and pioneers, originally from Japan, settled in the historic White River Valley area. Historically the Temple has been a portal to the surrounding community. An example is the popular annual Bon Odori summer festival. This is a great time for the public to share our culture and Dharma. Programs in Sharing the Dharma include:

* Minister Consultation with Families
* Weekly English Family Services
* Dharma School for Youth
* Monthly Family Memorial Services

Typical Sunday Schedule:

9:00 AM Zen Shin Meditation
10:30 AM Family Service in English

White River Buddhist Temple is part of the Northwest District which comprises of 6 Temples ( Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, Yakima, Oregon, and Idaho-Oregon ) and the Columbia Sangha. White River Buddhist Temple's Resident Minister Rev. Cyndi Yasaki participated in King County's Indignant Remains Ceremony with County Executive Zahilay earlier this month to recognize the 626 individuals who passed away in the last year.

The Indigent Remains Program provides burial for King County residents who have died without resources or family to claim their remains for a proper burial.

The number of people who die in King County without family to claim their remains has swelled in recent years.

White River was proud to host an interfaith gathering last night in collaboration with Tsuru for Solidarity during their 48 mile pilgrimage from Seattle to Tacoma to raise awareness about the treatment of immigrants in federal detention today. As a Temple that is historically rooted in the Japanese American community, many of the families in our Sangha were incarcerated during World War II and have faced extraordinary prejudice, xenophobia, and racism - trauma that continues to reverberate today.

The evening was an opportunity to learn more about the work being done by the group, hear from a diverse set of faith leaders (including White River’s Rev. Cyndi Yasaki and BCA Retired Minister Rev. Dr. Kenji Akahoshi), and heal together collectively as a community.

Chris Stearns is an attorney with more than 30 years of experience; Chris has dedicated his career to advancing Tribal sovereignty and expanding opportunity for Native communities. He currently serves as Washington State House Speaker Pro Tempore and Vice-Chair of the National Caucus of Native American State Legislators. He previously served as the first-ever Director of Native American Affairs at the U.S. Department of Energy and continues to serve on the Seattle Indian Health Board and the Washington State Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People Task Force. In the legislature, Chris has championed healthcare access, worker protections, clean energy, and policies that strengthen Tribal sovereignty, expand healthcare access, and create opportunities for communities across Washington.
