A beautifully written post highlighting and honoring our former Associate Minister, Reverend Dr. Miley Mae Hemphill

During segregation, few records were kept documenting the history of education for Black students. Dr. Miley Mae Hemphill made it her mission to change that, writing a thesis documenting the 13 schools that serviced Black families across Gwinnett County between 1937 and 1956. Decades later, it remains the most comprehensive record of those schools.

Dr. Hemphill, a lifelong Gwinnett educator, went on to a long career at the Georgia State Department of Education as a reading consultant. In February 2014, the Georgia House of Representatives passed HR1323, a resolution commending Dr. Hemphill for her contributions to her community and the state.

Her spirit of historic preservation also runs in the family. Dr. Hemphill's niece, Rubye Neal, became a noted local historian in her own right, leading efforts to preserve Hooper-Renwick School, the only high school in Gwinnett’s school system to provide a high school education to Black students during segregation.

Today, this historic school and glimpses of Dr. Hemphill’s impact live on through the Hooper-Renwick Themed Library in Lawrenceville.

Built in the early 1950s, this home on Cerro Street was first owned by G.T. Alexander & Sons and used as their realty office.

Between 1961 and 1967, it was home to Ralph David and Juanita Abernathy. In 1962, Rev. Abernathy was installed as pastor of West Hunter Street Baptist Church and the home was the site of many Fellowship Teas and other church events.
