“People who have come to know the joy of God do not deny the darkness, but they choose not to live in it. They claim that the light that shines in the darkness can be trusted more than the darkness itself and that a little bit of light can dispel a lot of darkness. They point each other to flashes of light here and there, and remind each other that they reveal the hidden but real presence of God. They discover that there are people who heal each other’s wounds, forgive each other’s offenses, share their possessions, foster the spirit of community, celebrate the gifts they have received, and live in constant anticipation of the full manifestation of God’s glory.” (Henri J.M. Nouwen)

I read this story and immediately thought about the need for a building to serve as a sanctuary/multi-purpose building in Nuba, Sudan. The number we have hoped to raise: $50,000. Check out this excerpt:
"With about 35 in average worship attendance, Mary’s Chapel sent $48,000 over six years to build the sanctuary. The church raised most of the money, but other churches, including Colonial Heights United Methodist in Kingsport and Central United Methodist in Lenoir City, both in Tennessee, contributed funds, (Smoky Mountain and Tennessee Valley district associate Samuel) Dzobo said."
If you would like to help make the Nuba sanctuary a reality, the Holston Conference UMC's Nuba Mountains-Sudan Advance Special number is 1009. Just mail your check to

Not able to do much for The Star. Helping neighbors and getting our own needs met right now. Today, we helped close friends get stuff out of a waterlogged storage unit. We’re on Day 7 of generator power.
Many places in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina are still cut off from civilization. Rescue personnel in our area are using everything from helicopter, to 4-wheelers, to horseback, to hiking to reach folks.
If you want to help, the best thing you can do is give to United Methodist Committee on Relief — 100 percent goes to the relief effort, not administrative expenses.
