Good morning, Church! Let's face it. We live in a hi-tech, entertainment driven culture. And that culture has crept into the Church. If it's not visually appealing, if the stage isn't filled with professional musicians and the sound blasting from equipment costing hundreds of thousands with video projecting from screens the size of houses, we're just not that interested.
Now, don't misunderstand where I'm headed here. I love music, and I enjoy listening to God-gifted Christians using their voices. Many of them are amazing!
But, I have to wonder, would these same congregations fill sancturaries that have no padded seats, no massive speakers, no orchestra or praise band, no smoke or flashing lights?
Would it be enough if it were just a preacher and a Bible, delivering the absolute Truth of God’s Word?
Beloved, the Church must be careful to make sure that what draws people to Christ is the conviction brought about from the Word, and not mere emotion created by a concert atmosphere.
Concerts have their place. But they must not be first place.
And to my fellow pastors, preachers, and evangelists, keep preaching the Word. Preach it with all your heart. Deliver it with love but without compromise. Proclaim it with power and enthusiasm, whether it's to thousands or a handful.
And Church, let's make sure the music prepares us for the Word, not the Word as an addition to the music.
It's not "the show must go on", but it's the Word must go out.
