Hey, we know that architect!

Come to the fellowship hall on Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 pm for some light refreshments and learn more about Jody’s work to preserve historic Black churches in our area.

About: At the center of most 19th century Black communities were two critical institutions — a church and a school. Beginning as modest, simple frame structures, later additions and improvements came as community size, wealth, and pride grew.

Since retiring five years ago as UVA’s Historic Preservation Architect, Jody Lahendro, FAIA, has provided professional services to central Virginia nonprofits seeking to preserve historic Black schools and churches. In this talk, Jody will present several of his projects, from initial community engagement and grant assistance, through the architectural and construction process. He will also discuss how these buildings fit within the broader cultural histories of Black education and religion.

🌀 Join us Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 pm for our second walking labyrinth of the year!

From facilitator Mary Ann Wamhoff: This labyrinth walk will provide an opportunity for reflection, support, and unity. Each quarter, participants will gather to share quiet moments, connect with their intentions, and send positive energy to those in need, both near and far. It’s a GLOBAL HEALING RESPONSE.

How did this begin? 21 years ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. Some folks decided to send love, prayers, and healing energy to Louisiana while they walked a labyrinth. We’re still doing this—only now we keep in mind recent global events that need a healing response. Go to https://globalhealingresponse.com/ for more information.

This year, the overarching theme is GROUNDING, remembering what holds us and returning to what steadies us—body, breath, Earth, and one another. While there are many specific situations, we Earthlings just seem to be generally in need.

The first quarter, we focused on PRESENCE. This quarter, we will cultivate ANCHORING by remembering what holds us steady—Earth, relationship, values, and the quiet supports beneath our lives. Our guiding question might be: What holds me when things feel uncertain?

ALL ARE WELCOME. Please be prepared to walk in socks or wear paper booties over your shoes. These will be provided. There will also be hand-held labyrinths for anyone with mobility issues. We should end by 3:00. Hope to see you there! Contact [email protected] if you have questions and check out https://www.virginialabyrinths.com/ for ongoing labyrinth work.
