Today, it seems common for us to share rags-to-riches stories as examples of success. We love these stories of vertical ascent.

But if we read Philippians, Paul made it clear that the earliest Christians knew that the greatest story ever told was not a rags-to-riches tale, but a riches-to-rags story.

Life is filled with storms. Storms do not discriminate. We all face different kinds of struggles and difficulties. Yet, through every storm, God remains faithful.

In Philippians 1:12-30, Paulโ€™s imprisonment did not define him. Instead, God used his circumstances to refine his faith, advance the gospel, and make his life a testimony for Christ.

Whether life is busy or has begun to slow down, one question remains: Does God really still expect me to grow?

Paul begins Philippians 1 with this promise โ€” He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ. Paulโ€™s confidence lay in God. God begins the work. God continues the work. God completes the work in us until Jesus Christ comes again.

We live in a world where we often filter what we see and what we show others. The same can happen with our faith. A filtered faith is when we present a level of spirituality to others that may not reflect the full reality of our lives. We show our best and hide the parts that are not beautiful or wonderful. When we do this, we can unintentionally create a false image of Christianity that makes it difficult for others to relate to or follow.

So, how do we recognise a filtered faith and respond in a way that leads others towards God?
