Ever tried to get someone to stop smoking? A smoker can read every warning label on a cigarette box. He knows the science, understands the risks, and even agrees that smoking is harmfulโ€ฆyet still continues smoking. Knowledge alone does not change him.

In the same way, a person may know the Bible, understand theology, and speak about Jesus intelligently, yet still not truly surrender to Christ. Salvation is not merely knowing facts about God; it is repentance, faith, and a transformed heart. Head knowledge can inform the mind, but only genuine faith can save the soul.

๐๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐งโ€™๐ญ ๐ฐ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐†๐จ๐ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‡๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ.

It was never about the evidence. Never about the science. Never about truth.

We resist Godโ€™s instructions because we want to decide for ourselves what is good, what is allowed, what will make us happy.

We are a covetous creature. We are attracted to the impure, the sexually immoral. But these have no place in the Kingdom of God (Eph. 5:5)

We chase these things and it feels like freedom at first, but time and time again, we see how this life slowly binds us. First to addiction, then to rot and decay.

The truth is, we always serve something - either it is our desires, our ambitions, or our fears.

But when we choose the right master, when we submit to what is good and true, the chains fall away. What looked like restriction becomes clarity, and what felt like surrender becomes freedom.

The Baptism is a believerโ€™s act of obedience shortly after believing on Jesus as their savior.

It is an outward expression of an inward change, symbolising the believerโ€™s identification with Christโ€™s death, burial, and resurrection.

In being immersed in water, the believer publicly declares that their old life of sin has been buried, and in rising out of the water, that they are now walking in a new life with Christ.

Baptism does not save a person or wash away sin; rather, it follows salvation as a testimony of faith. It is reserved for those who have personally made a conscious decision to trust in Jesus, which is why it is often called โ€œbelieverโ€™s baptism.โ€

Baptism is also a public declaration before others, affirming oneโ€™s commitment to follow Christ and to be part of the community of believers.

While it is not a requirement for salvation, it is considered an important step of obedience that reflects a genuine faith and desire to live according to Godโ€™s will.

๐–๐ก๐จ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž โ€œ๐’๐ฎ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐š๐ง๐ญโ€ ๐ข๐ง ๐ˆ๐ฌ๐š๐ข๐š๐ก?

The Book of Isaiah in the Old Testament of the Bible was written roughly between 740BC and 680BC. Hundreds of years before the coming of Jesus.

The โ€œSuffering Servantโ€ in the Book of Isaiah, especially in Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12, illustrates a person: one who would suffer, not for his own wrongdoing, but on behalf of others.

This servant is described as being despised and rejected, a man of sorrows, familiar with pain.

Yet, his suffering is not meaningless.

Here is a powerful verse:

There is no question who this Suffering Servant is.

๐€๐ง๐ ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐š๐ง ๐š๐ฐ๐ž๐ฌ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž ๐†๐จ๐!

He reshapes the small human view of victory.

Instead of triumph through power or conquest, this Servant brings healing and restoration through humility, obedience, and sacrifice. His willingness to endure suffering becomes the very means by which others are made whole.

He completely reframes suffering not as defeat, but as a pathway to salvation.

Jesus is the promised Messiah.

The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus mirror the servantโ€™s journey: misunderstood, rejected, and ultimately crucified, yet accomplishing redemption for humanity.

Isaiahโ€™s prophecy, written centuries before, provides a profound theological lens through which believers understand the purpose of Christโ€™s suffering: not accidental, but divinely intended for the reconciliation of people to God.

Todayโ€™s characters are โ€œ๐˜๐ž ๐’๐ฎโ€ (๐‰๐ž๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ). In โ€œSuโ€, the character brings together three ideas in one: fish (an early symbol of Christ), grain (that makes bread, the bread of life!), and the phonetic meaning is โ€œreviveโ€ or โ€œcome back to lifeโ€.

Jesus is a historical figure - documented even by secular historians of his time.

Also, Jesus is God. Jesus Himself said He is God, for example:

โ€œBefore Abraham was, I AM.โ€ - John 8:58, with this He invoked Godโ€™s name. Also in John 10, He said โ€œI and the Father are one.โ€

When you break the character down, it contains ่€ณ (โ€œearโ€).
The component ้˜, when it appears on the right side of a character, comes from ้‚‘, meaning city, community, or district.

That combination naturally brings to mind the words:

He was quoting from Deuteronomy 6:4, the passage that begins the Shema Yisrael - a central declaration of faith that Jews continue to pray to this day.

What does that mean for us? Acknowledge our sins, turn from it, and place your trust in Jesus the Messiah to reconcile you to God.

Todayโ€™s Chinese character is the second-to-last in this series.

The word โ€œyangโ€ means example, pattern, or template. Itโ€™s a happy coincidence that the character includes the components for โ€œlamb,โ€ โ€œwood/tree,โ€ and โ€œforever.โ€

Christ is known as the Lamb of God, and He was lifted up on a tree for humanity. If you follow his pattern/example/template, take up your cross and follow Him, there is the promise of eternity - restored to Godโ€™s family.

In Singapore, weโ€™re used to rules. Donโ€™t do this. Donโ€™t do that.

The Chinese word for โ€œprohibitโ€ is ็ฆ (jรฌn).

Look closely at the character. At the top are two instances of the character for โ€œwoodโ€ (ๆœจ), representing trees. Below them is the radical ็คบ, which relates to instruction.

More interestingly, ็คบ as a radical is also called the โ€œspiritโ€radical. ็คบ is associated with religion, rituals, and offerings to heaven or spirits.

In the light of Genesis, this makes complete sense: divine instructions were given to mankind. Do not eat of the fruit of the prohibited trees.

Amazing, isnโ€™t it?
