Are you trapped on the hamster wheel of endless striving? 🐹💨

Romans 12:2 tells us not to be shaped by the patterns of this world. But what does that look like when the world tells us to achieve more, do more and keep going?

At last Friday’s YA Service, Prof April Westbrook answered questions about biblical success, discerning God’s calling, Sabbath, and how we can step off the hamster wheel of endless striving.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑮𝒐𝒅’𝒔 𝒆𝒚𝒆𝒔?

The world defines success as an endless pursuit of “more”, keeping us on a hamster wheel of constant striving that never truly satisfies.

Biblical success is simply being the person God created us to be. When we seek His kingdom first, we align our lives with His redemptive purpose and learn to live within His rhythms of grace instead of constantly striving for more.

𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒅𝒐 𝑰 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑮𝒐𝒅 𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒐?

Identifying your calling starts with recognising God’s voice. We do this by getting to know Him through His Word. The more we understand God’s character, the better we discern His leading. And remember: God’s greatest priority is the redemption of humanity.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒘𝒆 𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒂𝒃𝒃𝒂𝒕𝒉?

The Sabbath is so important to God that He included it in the Ten Commandments. We were created with Sabbath woven into the rhythm of our lives.

When we ignore that rhythm, we’re living against the way God designed us. And when we do that, it doesn’t just affect us; it affects everyone around us too.

𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝑺𝒂𝒃𝒃𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒚 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈?

Sabbath is not just a “resting from” but a “resting toward.” Walking in your calling requires an overflow of God’s presence. Stepping off the endless wheel of busyness creates space for God to move. It reminds us that we aren’t machines, and more importantly, we aren’t God. Slow down, receive, and

Do you see prayer as a way to make requests to a distant God who is hard to please? Or do you see it as an invitation to know Him?

Over the weekend, 🙏🏼 showed us how relational prayer is a loving invitation into close communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 5:22 is often quoted on the submission of the wives to their husbands. Prof April Westbrook draws a parallel to verse 25, that the husbands are called to love their wives just as Christ loved the church.

If the prior is taken as truth only for the wives, then the latter has to be true only for the husbands. Yet, that’s not what Paul is trying to imply!

“There are seasons when, as leaders, you can’t see clearly what comes next. You don’t see the whole picture, nor have all the strategies. But if you can still hear the voice of Jesus Christ, then you’ll be okay. You’ll keep on moving.” Kong Hee

Last night’s Leaders’ Meeting reminded us why we do what we do. God has given us the grace for what He has called us to do, and in this next season, we want to stay focused on what truly matters. In an increasingly disconnected world, we must build an atmosphere of love that breeds community. Not a weekend-only kind of love, but one that is present in our everyday lives, where people are known and cared for, and walk together through every season of life.

Leaders, you are more than facilitators of meetings. You are shepherds, spiritual mentors and carriers of the presence of Jesus. So let’s keep hearing His voice, loving His people, and in the words of Kong Hee, keep on keeping on!

What is weighing you down? Prof April Westbrook shares from Matthew 11:28 that Jesus invites us to stop toiling and striving in our brokenness and come to Him for rest. We were created to share in His light yoke and easy burden, called to function out of wholeness in partnership with Him.

What happens when you walk into a room on fire for Jesus?

You may not know how to worship.
You may not know how to pray.
You may not even know what to believe.

But when you find yourself surrounded by people who are loving Jesus, worshipping Jesus, believing Jesus. The fire of God begins to catch on.

That is the power of a strong spiritual atmosphere. It’s not something we manufacture, nor is it an emotional high.

Sometimes, all it takes is getting close enough to the fire. Come into the house of the Lord.

“God’s primary concern is not simply whether you choose this or that, but who you are becoming through those choices. His desire is to form you into the likeness of Christ, and He is able to work in your life through any of those choices. So choose, have fun—and bring Him into the realities you are invited into.

“And if it matters that much, He is very, very capable of communicating in such a way that you would not miss it—even writing on the wall in flames, if He needs to.” Bill Dogterom

From navigating singleness and dating apps to dealing with betrayal, divorce and rebellious teenagers, Prof Bill Dogterom offers practical wisdom for some of life’s most complicated relationships—and reminds us why our identity must first be anchored in Jesus.

A weekend filled with celebrations, not just for Kong Hee’s 62nd birthday, but one that culminated in a big surprise party for his 40th year in ministry! The board members, pastors, staff, and leaders of the church gathered together earlier today and … what an afternoon of laughter, tears and love.
