John 18

Bible Verses
"Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, 'Whom is it you want?'" (John 18:4)

Jesus answered, ‘I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’ 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: ‘I have not lost one of those you gave me.’ (John 18:8-9)

"My kingdom is not of this world." (John 18:36)

Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’ (John 18:37)

"Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising." (John 18:40)

Reflection

John 18 reveals both the sovereignty of Jesus and the different ways people respond to Him.

Judas chose his own desires and betrayed Jesus.
Yet even through this act, God's plan prevailed. Jesus' arrest led to His death and resurrection, fulfilling God's promise of redemption and offering eternal life to all who believe.

Peter denied Jesus out of fear, showing how even faithful believers can stumble. However, unlike Judas, Peter repented when he realized his mistake. He returned to follow Christ and later boldly proclaimed Him. This reminds us that Jesus prays for and strengthens those who sincerely believe and repent.

Pilate recognized Jesus' innocence yet compromised because he feared the people more than he feared God. The crowd rejected Jesus and chose Barabbas, a guilty man, instead of the innocent Son of God.

Yet throughout the chapter, Jesus remained fully in control. He willingly surrendered Himself to fulfill the Father's will and protect His disciples. No one took His life from Him; He gave Himself for the salvation of humanity.

The choice of Barabbas is a picture of the gospel. The guilty man was set free while the innocent Jesus was condemned. In the same way, we are sinners who receive freedom because Christ took our place on the cross.

John 18 challenges us to examine our hearts. Will we betray Jesus like Judas, deny Him like Peter, compromise like Pilate, or reject Him like the crowd? Or will we stand on the side of truth and faithfully follow Him as our King?

Questions for Reflection
1. Are there areas in my life where I am choosing my own desires over God's will like Judas?
2. Have fear or pressure caused me to deny or hide my faith like Peter?
3. Do I compromise what is right to gain the approval of others like Pilate?
4. Am I listening to and living according to the truth of Jesus?
5. How can I show gratitude that Jesus took my place, just as Barabbas was set free?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for willingly giving Yourself for my salvation. Forgive me for the times I have failed, compromised, or chosen my own way. Help me to walk in Your truth, stand firm in faith, and follow You wholeheartedly. Thank You for taking my place so that I may receive eternal life. Amen.

Many Christians have heard of justification, sanctification, and glorification, but understanding these truths helps us better appreciate God's plan of salvation.
They show us what God has done for us, what He is doing in us, and what He has prepared for us. Knowing these truths can strengthen our faith and encourage us in our walk with Christ.

1. Justification is God's act of declaring a sinner righteous through faith in Jesus Christ. It is a one-time event based on Christ's finished work, not on our own efforts or good deeds

"Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. " (Romans 5:1)

Past aspect of salvation: "I have been saved."

2. Sanctification — Being Saved from the Power of Sin

This is the ongoing process by which believers are transformed to become more like Christ. While justification changes our standing before God, sanctification changes our daily lives and character through the work of the Holy Spirit.

"Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. " (John 17:17)

Present aspect of salvation: "I am being saved."

3. Glorification — Saved from the Presence of Sin
This occurs when Christ returns or when believers enter His presence. Sin is completely removed, and believers are perfected.

“And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.” (Romans 8:30)

Future aspect of salvationg: "I will be saved to."

Today’s Bible Reading: John 17
Bible Verses

John 17:1
"Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you."
John 17:3
"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
John 17:5
Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.
John 17:15
"My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one."
John 17:17
"Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth."
John 17:18
"As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world."
John 17:20
"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message."
John 17:21
"That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you."
John 17:24
"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory..."

Reflection:
On the night before the cross, Jesus lifted His eyes to heaven and prayed.
He first prayed for Himself. He asked the Father to glorify Him so that He would glorify the Father. This was not a prayer for personal honor, but the fulfillment of God’s plan through His death and resurrection. Jesus revealed His divine unity with God and His existence before the world began. He is now returning to the Father, having completed the work He was sent to do. Through this, God’s Word is fulfilled, and God is glorified. As people believe in Him, they come to know the Father as the one true God and receive eternal life.

Then Jesus prayed for His disciples. He asked the Father not to take them out of the world, but to protect them from the evil one. He prayed that they would be sanctified through God’s truth, for His Word is truth. Just as the Father sent Him into the world, He now sends them into the world.

Finally, Jesus prayed for all future believers—including us today. He prayed that all who believe in Him would be one, united in the same love and truth that He shares with the Father. He desired that we would experience the Father’s love and one day be with Him to see His glory.

We are in the world, but we do not belong to it. God’s Kingdom is different from the world’s broken systems. We are called not to conform to the world’s values, but to live for God’s glory above all else.

When Jesus teaches us to pray in His name, He is inviting us to come to the Father through faith in Him. It is not just a phrase we say, but a life of trust in Christ—knowing that through Him alone we have access to God.
May we be kept by the Father, sanctified by His truth, united in His love, and faithful to His mission until the day we see His glory face to face.

Amen.

John 16 – Bible Verses

"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth." (John 16:13)

"You will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy." (John 16:20)

"You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father." (John 16:24)

"Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

Reflection
Through Jesus' death and resurrection, we are forgiven, made right with God, and welcomed into God's family.
Jesus told His disciples that they would face trouble and persecution because they followed Him. They would grieve at His death, but their sorrow would turn into joy when He rose again and sent the Holy Spirit, our Helper and Advocate.
The Holy Spirit stays with believers, guides us into truth, helps us know Jesus, and shows the world its need for Him.
Jesus also taught that we can pray to the Father in His name. This is not just saying Jesus' name at the end of a prayer, but trusting in Him and believing that He came from God.
John 16 reminds us that although we will face difficulties in this world, we can have peace and joy in Christ. Through the Holy Spirit, we are never alone, and we can take heart because Jesus has overcome the world.

Amen/ 🙏

Continuing our journey through the Gospel of John, today we reflect on John 15. I invite you to read, meditate on these verses, and share any insights or reflections that stood out to you.

Bible Verses:
John 15:1-2
"I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more."
John 15:4-5
"Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing."
John 15:6
"Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned."
John 15:12-13
"This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends."
John 15:18-20
"If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first... Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you."
John 15:26-27
"But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry."

Reflection:
Jesus is the true Vine, the source of our spiritual life, strength, nourishment, and growth. God the Father is the Gardener who lovingly cares for His vineyard. He removes what is dead and prunes what is living so that it may become even more fruitful. Although pruning can be painful, it is done with purpose because God desires for us to grow closer to Him and reflect His character in our lives.
We are the branches. A branch cannot survive on its own. It depends entirely on the vine for life. In the same way, we depend completely on Jesus Christ. When we remain connected to Him through faith, prayer, obedience, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we grow spiritually and bear good fruit. The fruits of a life rooted in Christ are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These fruits are evidence that Christ is working in us.

Jesus reminds us that apart from Him we can do nothing. A branch separated from the vine will eventually wither and die. Likewise, when we separate ourselves from Christ and choose to follow our own ways instead of His, our spiritual lives become weak and unfruitful. This is why Jesus calls us to remain in Him, to follow His teachings, obey His commands, and trust in His Word.

Remaining in Christ is possible because of His great love for us. Jesus demonstrated the greatest act of love when He laid down His life on the cross for our sins. Though we are not worthy, He freely gave Himself so that we could be forgiven, restored to God, and receive eternal life through His grace. Because of His sacrifice, we are invited into a relationship with Him and called to remain in His love.

Jesus also teaches us to love one another just as He loved us. As branches connected to the true Vine, our lives should reflect His love, mercy, compassion, and kindness to those around us. When people see the fruit in our lives, they should see Christ working through us.

At the same time, Jesus warns us that following Him will bring opposition from the world. Just as the world hated and persecuted Him, His followers may also face rejection, persecution, and difficulties because of their faith. Yet we should not be discouraged. Jesus promised that He would send the Holy Spirit, our Helper and Advocate, to guide, strengthen, and encourage us. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are equipped to remain faithful and boldly proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ.

John 15 reminds us to stay connected to the true Vine. Let us trust the Father's pruning, remain in Christ's love, bear fruit that glorifies God, and rely on the Holy Spirit in every season of life. For when we remain in Jesus, we will have the strength to endure, the power to grow, and the privilege of sharing His love and truth with the world.

Today’s Bible Readings: John 14

Bible Verses
John 14:1
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.”

John 14:2–3
“My Father’s house has many rooms... I am going there to prepare a place for you.”

John 14:6
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:15–17
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.”

John 14:26
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Reflection:
In John 14, Jesus comforts His disciples with these words: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” This passage reminds us that when we fully surrender our lives to God and place our complete trust in Jesus, we can experience true peace in our hearts. Instead of being consumed by worry and fear, we can find contentment and confidence in His promises and faithfulness.
Jesus assures us that He is preparing a place for us in His Father's house. Through faith in Him, we already possess eternal life and have the assurance that we belong to God forever. This promise gives us peace, hope, and confidence that our lives are secure in Christ.

Jesus then declares, “I am the way and the truth and the life.”
The Way – Jesus is the only way to the Father. He leads us on the right path and transforms our hearts so that we may truly know God and walk according to His will.
The Truth – Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promises and the revelation of God's truth. Through Him, we receive forgiveness of sins and redemption. He reveals the Father to us and shows us the truth that leads to salvation.
The Life – Through Jesus' death and resurrection, we receive forgiveness, new life, and the promise of eternal life. He also promised to send the Holy Spirit, our Advocate, to dwell within us. Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we are made alive in Christ, transformed by God's grace, and empowered to live according to His will. Jesus is the Life because through Him we receive eternal life, and through the Holy Spirit we experience that new life in Christ even now.

John 14 also teaches us the connection between love and obedience. Jesus says that those who love Him will keep His commandments. As believers, our obedience is not driven by obligation but by love for Christ. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are led into truth, strengthened to follow His teachings, and enabled to live according to God's purpose.
And reminds us of our greatest purpose: to know God and Jesus Christ whom He sent. As we trust in Christ, rest in His peace, walk in obedience, and depend on the Holy Spirit, we grow in our relationship with God and live in the assurance of the eternal life He has given us.

Amen.

Self-Reflection Questions:

1. Do you trust God completely, allowing yourself to experience the peace that He freely gives to all who believe in Him?
2. Are you listening to the Holy Spirit who dwells within you and allowing Him to guide you in living according to God's purpose for your life?
3. Are you growing in your knowledge of God—His character, His love, what He has done for you through Christ, and what He continues to do in your life each day?
