A Capela-Mor da Sé de Lisboa possui dois magníficos órgãos de tubos, testemunhos de diferentes épocas da história da música sacra.

O órgão em talha dourada foi construído pelo organeiro Joaquim António Peres Fontanes, entre 1785 e 1786, sendo um notável exemplar da organaria portuguesa do século XVIII.

Já o órgão da imagem, construído pela prestigiada firma holandesa D. A. Flentrop em 1960, veio enriquecer o património musical da Catedral, permitindo a interpretação de um vasto repertório litúrgico e de concerto.

✨ Na Sé de Lisboa, a beleza contempla-se com os olhos… e vive-se também através da música.

The Main Chapel of Lisbon Cathedral is home to two magnificent pipe organs, each reflecting a different chapter in the history of sacred music.

The gilded woodcarved organ was built by the organ maker Joaquim António Peres Fontanes between 1785 and 1786, and is a remarkable example of eighteenth-century Portuguese organ building.

The organ shown in the photograph was built in 1960 by the renowned Dutch firm D. A. Flentrop, enriching the Cathedral's musical heritage and enabling the performance of a wide repertoire of sacred and concert music.

Nascido em 1842, em Gouveia, foi ordenado sacerdote em 1865 e nomeado Patriarca de Lisboa pelo Papa São Pio X em 1907, recebendo posteriormente a dignidade cardinalícia.

A imagem recorda o cortejo solene da sua investidura como Patriarca de Lisboa, em 1908, que percorreu as ruas da cidade e terminou na Sé Patriarcal de Lisboa, onde decorreu a cerimónia solene de entrada do novo Pastor da Diocese.

Durante o seu longo patriarcado, acompanhou a Igreja de Lisboa num período de profundas transformações políticas, sociais e religiosas, incluindo a implantação da República em 1910.

, in 1929, Cardinal D. António Mendes Bello, Patriarch of Lisbon from 1907 to 1929, passed away.

Born in 1842 in Gouveia, he was ordained a priest in 1865 and appointed Patriarch of Lisbon by Pope Saint Pius X in 1907, later receiving the dignity of Cardinal.

The photograph recalls the solemn procession of his investiture as Patriarch of Lisbon in 1908, which travelled through the streets of the city and ended at the Patriarchal Cathedral of Lisbon, where the solemn ceremony marking the entrance of the new Shepherd of the Diocese took place.

During his long patriarchate, he accompanied the Church of Lisbon through a period of profound political, social and religious changes, including the establishment of the Republic in 1910.

Na Sé Patriarcal de Lisboa, cada espaço guarda uma parte da sua história.

Um dos lugares mais singulares é o Camarim do Patriarca, a antiga dependência onde o Patriarca de Lisboa se preparava e revestia com as vestes litúrgicas antes das grandes celebrações.

Entre os elementos que aí se encontram, destacam-se as sete mitras, peças que evocam a dignidade episcopal do Patriarca e a sua relação com as Dioceses sufragâneas da Província Eclesiástica de Lisboa.

Mais do que objetos de valor artístico, estas peças testemunham a riqueza da tradição litúrgica da Igreja e a história secular do Patriarcado de Lisboa.

At the Patriarchal Cathedral of Lisbon, every corner tells a story.

One of its most unique spaces is the Patriarch’s Chamber, the room where the Patriarch of Lisbon would prepare and vest in his liturgical garments before major celebrations.

Among the elements displayed there, the seven mitres stand out — pieces that reflect the episcopal dignity of the Patriarch and his connection with the suffragan Dioceses of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lisbon.

More than objects of artistic value, these pieces bear witness to the richness of the Church’s liturgical tradition and the centuries-old history of the Patriarchate of Lisbon.

, em 1977, faleceu o Cardeal-Patriarca de Lisboa D. Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira, uma das figuras mais marcantes da Igreja Católica portuguesa do século XX.

Nascido em 1888, em Lousado, Vila Nova de Famalicão, foi ordenado sacerdote em 1911 e nomeado Bispo Auxiliar de Lisboa em 1928. No ano seguinte, foi nomeado Patriarca de Lisboa pelo Papa Pio XI, recebendo também a dignidade cardinalícia.

Durante o seu longo patriarcado, acompanhou a vida da Igreja em Lisboa ao longo de um período marcado por profundas mudanças na sociedade portuguesa e no contexto internacional. Participou no Concílio Vaticano II (1962-1965), uma das grandes assembleias da Igreja Católica no século XX.

, in 1977, Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon D. Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira passed away, one of the most prominent figures of the Portuguese Catholic Church in the 20th century.

Born in 1888 in Lousado, Vila Nova de Famalicão, he was ordained a priest in 1911 and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Lisbon in 1928. The following year, he was appointed Patriarch of Lisbon by Pope Pius XI, receiving the dignity of Cardinal at the same time.

Neste dia assinala-se a morte de D. João V, falecido a 31 de julho de 1750, um dos monarcas que mais marcou a história religiosa, artística e cultural de Portugal.

Conhecido como o “Rei Magnânimo”, D. João V teve um papel fundamental na afirmação da importância espiritual de Lisboa. Durante o seu reinado, em 1716, foi criado o Patriarcado de Lisboa, uma das maiores expressões da ligação entre a Coroa portuguesa e a Igreja, elevando a cidade a uma nova dimensão religiosa.

A Sé de Lisboa, enquanto coração espiritual da capital, acompanhou este período de grande transformação. O século XVIII trouxe ao monumento novas expressões artísticas, marcadas pelo gosto barroco e pela espiritualidade da época, refletindo o ambiente religioso e cultural vivido durante o reinado de D. João V.

Hoje, ao recordar a sua memória, recordamos também uma época em que fé, arte e história se uniram para deixar marcas profundas no património de Lisboa.

On this day, we remember the death of King João V, who passed away on 31 July 1750, one of the monarchs who most profoundly shaped Portugal’s religious, artistic, and cultural history.

Known as the “Magnanimous King”, João V played a fundamental role in strengthening Lisbon’s spiritual importance. During his reign, in 1716, the Patriarchate of Lisbon was established, one of the greatest expressions of the connection between the Portuguese Crown and the Church, giving the city a new religious significance.

Lisbon Cathedral, as the spiritual heart of the capital, also experienced this period of great transformation. The 18th century brought new artistic expressions to the monument, marked by the Baroque style and the spirituality of the time, reflecting the religious and cultural atmosphere of João V’s reign.

Today, as we remember his legacy, we also recall an era in which faith, art, and history came together to leave a profound mark on Lisbon’s heritage.

📚 Um tesouro de fé e conhecimento na Sé de Lisboa

Há espaços na Sé de Lisboa que, apesar de discretos, guardam histórias de enorme valor. A Biblioteca da Sé é um desses lugares, onde o silêncio das estantes nos convida a descobrir séculos de fé, estudo e tradição.

Nos seus armários encontram-se preciosos testemunhos da vida da Igreja, como livros de Direito Canónico, dois volumes de música pertencentes ao importante Arquivo Musical da Sé, estojos para alfaias litúrgicas e até duas batutas usadas na orientação musical.

Mais do que uma biblioteca, este é um espaço onde se preserva a memória da comunidade cristã, o conhecimento transmitido ao longo dos séculos e a beleza da liturgia através da palavra e da música.

There are spaces at Lisbon Cathedral that, although discreet, preserve stories of great value. The Cathedral Library is one of these places, where the silence of its shelves invites us to discover centuries of faith, study, and tradition.

Among its cabinets are precious testimonies of the life of the Church, including Canon Law books, two volumes of music from the important Cathedral Musical Archive, cases for liturgical objects, and even two conductor’s batons used to guide musical performances.

On this special day, we remember Saint Anne and Saint Joachim, the parents of the Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus, as examples of faith, love, and devotion to family.

At Lisbon Cathedral, the Patriarch’s Chamber preserves precious artistic representations dedicated to these saints: a sculpture of Saint Anne teaching the Virgin Mary to read, and two paintings depicting important moments from their story — the meeting of Saint Anne and Saint Joachim at the Golden Gate and the birth of Our Lady.

These works invite us to reflect on the role of grandparents as transmitters of faith, keepers of family memory, and a presence of love and wisdom throughout generations.

Ao percorrer a Sé, entre a Capela de São Sebastião e a Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, encontra-se um detalhe singular que muitos visitantes não notam: um dos pilares apresenta-se ligeiramente deslocado da sua base.
