Hoje, 21 de setembro, celebramos Santa Efigénia, princesa da Núbia.
Segundo a tradição, Efigénia era filha dos reis Égipo e Eufenisa e vivia na Núbia quando o apóstolo São Mateus chegou à região para anunciar o Evangelho. Num contexto marcado pelo paganismo e pela oposição à nova fé, a jovem princesa reconheceu a mensagem de Cristo e decidiu entregar a sua vida a Deus.
Movida por uma fé profunda, Efigénia dedicou-se a levar o Cristianismo ao seu povo. A sua coragem, porém, despertou a ira daqueles que se opunham à sua conversão. Condenada à morte e lançada às chamas, Efigénia invocou o nome de Jesus e entregou-se inteiramente à proteção divina. A tradição conta que, nesse momento, um Anjo desceu do Céu e a libertou do fogo.
Pela sua fé, coragem e devoção, Santa Efigénia é venerada como “Libertadora da Núbia” e invocada como protetora contra os incêndios.

Today, September 21, we celebrate Saint Euphemia, Princess of Nubia.
According to tradition, Euphemia was the daughter of King Aegippus and Queen Euphensia and lived in Nubia when the Apostle Saint Matthew arrived in the region to preach the Gospel. In a context marked by paganism and opposition to the new faith, the young princess embraced the message of Christ and decided to dedicate her life to God.
Moved by a deep faith, Euphemia devoted herself to spreading Christianity among her people. Her courage, however, aroused the anger of those who opposed her conversion. Condemned to death and thrown into the flames, Euphemia called upon the name of Jesus and placed herself entirely under divine protection. Tradition holds that, at that moment, an Angel descended from Heaven and delivered her from the fire.
Because of her faith, courage, and devotion, Saint Euphemia is venerated as the “Liberator of Nubia” and invoked as a protector against fires.
