Coming up at Holy Trinity Cathedral

There’s plenty happening at Holy Trinity Cathedral this week. Here are a few highlights:

PRAYERS FOR NEPAL/TIBET
A prayer station has been created at the Cathedral’s Mountain Fountain, where you are invited to pause, lay a flower or spend a moment in silence as we pray for those affected by the devastating glacial flooding in Nepal and Tibet, including those who have died, those who grieve and those still missing.

THURSDAY 3 - SATURDAY 5 SEPTEMBER
Diocesan Synod began this evening with an Opening Eucharist at St Mary’s-in-Holy Trinity. Synod continues at the Cathedral through to Saturday.

SUNDAY 6 SEPTEMBER —
SEASON OF CREATION
8am & 10am | Holy Trinity Cathedral
Our Season of Creation begins this Sunday, with Eucharists at 8am and 10am. We welcome Dr Greg Morgan from Auckland City Council as our guest preacher.

During September, we’ll be exploring our relationship with God, creation and our common home, with guest speakers from environmental ministry, community leadership, local government and theology.

FINAL QUIET AFTERNOON
12–5pm | Bishop Selwyn Chapel
Join the Reverend Frank Nelson for the final afternoon in our winter series — a time for stillness, Scripture, reflection and prayer, exploring the Gospel of Matthew.

CHORAL EVENSONG WITH THE NEW ZEALAND YOUTH CHOIR
5pm | Holy Trinity Cathedral
Join us for a beautiful Choral Evensong, sung by the New Zealand Youth Choir. The service will also be livestreamed on the Cathedral's YouTube channel.

The Second Session of the Fifty-Eighth Synod starts tonight, with an opening Eucharist service in St Mary's. Please pray for those involved in hosting and supporting the event and for Synod members as they discuss and deliberate the matters before Synod.

A PLACE TO REMEMBER AND PRAY FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY THE DISASTER IN NEPAL AND TIBET

A floral wreath has been placed on Terry Stringer’s Mountain Fountain on the forecourt of Holy Trinity Cathedral as a place of remembrance and prayer following the devastating events in Nepal/Tibet.

Anyone is welcome to visit the fountain and lay a flower, say a prayer, sing, or simply spend a moment in silence for those who have died, those who are grieving, and the hundreds of people still missing.

We hold hope that those who are missing will be found, and pray that their families and loved ones may know comfort and strength in the days ahead.

Our grateful thanks to Flowers After Hours in Parnell, who have kindly sponsored the beautiful floral wreath.

Throughout September, we’re marking the Season of Creation with a special series of Sunday Eucharists at 8am and 10am, welcoming guest speakers from a range of backgrounds to help us reflect on our relationship with God, creation and our common home.

This Sunday, we welcome Dr Greg Morgan, Business and Partnerships Principal at Auckland City Council.

Join us for worship, prayer and thoughtful reflection as we begin our Season of Creation journey together.

There’s plenty happening as we move into September.

⛪ Diocesan Synod
From 3–5 September, Holy Trinity Cathedral will host the second session of the 58th Auckland Diocesan Synod, beginning with the Opening Eucharist at 6.30pm on Thursday 3 September at St Mary’s-in-Holy Trinity. Please pray for Bishop Ross Bay, our Cathedral representatives and all those gathering for this important time of worship, listening and discernment.

🌿 Season of Creation
Throughout September, our 8am and 10am Sunday Eucharists will feature guest preachers exploring our relationship with creation, our common home and one another. Find out more about our speakers on the Cathedral website.

🕯️ Final Quiet Afternoon
Join the Reverend Frank Nelson for the final Quiet Afternoon of the winter series on Sunday 6 September, 12–5pm. A chance to pause, pray and rest in the peace of the Cathedral. All are welcome to meet in the Bishop Selwyn Chapel for this final session.

GALA CONCERT INFORMATION ORCHESTRAS

Congratulations to everyone involved in this year’s festival so far, and to our orchestras selected for Saturday’s Gala Concerts!

COMMAND PERFORMANCE AWARD NOMINATIONS
Congratulations to the following chamber and symphony orchestras who have been nominated for the Trevor Thwaites Chairperson’s Command Performance Award:

- Avondale Symphony Orchestra for their performance of Skyfall by Adele Adkins & Paul Epworth
- Howick College Chamber Orchestra for their performance of Lady Gaga Fugue by Stefani Germanotta & Nadir Khayat

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA AWARDS
Congratulations to the following four Chamber Orchestras that have been shortlisted by the adjudicators to perform in the first half of the Gala Concert at Holy Trinity Cathedral this Saturday 15th August which starts at 2:00pm:

1. ACG Parnell String Orchestra
2. Diocesan Chamber Orchestra
3. Westlake Boys Camerata
4. Saint Kentigern Chamber Orchestra

In the event that one of the orchestras above is unable to perform in the concert, one of the following reserves will be invited to fill that place:

- Reserve 1: Westlake Chamber Orchestra
- Reserve 2: Dilworth Senior Chamber Orchestra

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AWARDS
Congratulations to the following four Symphony Orchestras that have been invited by the adjudicators to perform in the first half of the Gala Concert at Holy Trinity Cathedral this Saturday 15th August which starts at 6:30pm:

COME AND SING! CHORAL EVENSONG

Come and experience the joy and excitement of Cathedral singing at our next Come and Sing! Choral Evensong.

Whether you are a regular at our Come and Sing events or new to choral singing, you are warmly invited to join the Holy Trinity Cathedral Choir for an afternoon of rehearsal, fellowship and beautiful music, culminating in a full Choral Evensong at 5pm.

The programme includes music by Harris, Cullen, Stanford and Bullock, directed by Peter Watts, Director of Choirs, with Dr Philip Smith, Cathedral Organist.

Next week, Holy Trinity Cathedral once again comes alive with the sound of music as we welcome the KBB Music Festival, one of Auckland’s most anticipated annual celebrations of young musical talent.

For many years, the Cathedral has been privileged to host this much-loved festival, opening both Holy Trinity Cathedral and St Mary’s-in-Holy Trinity to school orchestras, concert bands, jazz ensembles, and chamber groups from across the region. Throughout the week, hundreds of talented young musicians will gather in our sacred spaces to perform, learn, and celebrate the joy of making music together.

Music has always been at the heart of the Cathedral’s life and ministry. It is a privilege to provide a place where young people can develop their gifts, grow in confidence, and experience the inspiration that comes from performing in two of Auckland’s most beautiful worship spaces. The festival also reminds us of the Cathedral’s role as a gathering place for the wider community, bringing together students, teachers, families, and supporters in a shared celebration of creativity, excellence, and collaboration.

As we extend a warm welcome to all those taking part, we also ask our regular visitors and congregation members to note that access to both Holy Trinity Cathedral and St Mary’s will be limited throughout the festival week while events are in progress. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we host this wonderful annual celebration of music and the remarkable talents of Auckland’s young musicians.

Thanks to our awesome KBBMF team the stage is all set, venues and warmup rooms are ready and there we’re all ready to go for tomorrow’s KBB Music Festival.

The piano is having its tuning finessed and the adjudicators are arriving in Auckland so they can get a good night’s sleep before things kick out at 9:30am tomorrow morning.
