TWO BY TWO

Mark 6:7
And He called to Him the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority and power over the unclean spirits.

Jesus gave authority and sent on a mission his twelve disciples to go and overpower unclean spirits. These twelve can also be called apostles in the sense that they were now His messengers (the sent out ones) or His ambassadors. As we see here apostleship is based on function rather than title or hierarchy (position) in a ministry.

Secondly we see the power of delegation. Jesus allowed them to practice this far what they had been learning. For there would be a day when He would not be with them. And by that time they would have gained enough experience to act on their own under the power of the Holy Spirit.

Thirdly, we also note that there were six teams of two by two. He did not send them one by one. There is a good reason. One by one could double the mission teams, but may have been a recipe for failure. For starters, dealing with unclean spirits was a new territory. He had not assigned them this task before. They needed to encourage each other and help each other especially in the face of the spirits being uncooperative or stubborn.

Bill Withers was right: We all need somebody to lean on.

OUT OF COMPASSION

Mark 5:40
And they laughed and jeered at Him. But He put them all out, and, taking the child's father and mother and those who were with Him, He went in where the little girl was lying.

Jesus had just arrived at the family home and announced that the daughter of Jairus was sleeping, when actually, she was dead. This understandably attracted laughter and jeers. They most probably did not know Jesus and none knew that he had power to raise the dead. Besides, the people must have thought that Jesus was crazy to make such an announcement before mourners. He asked them to vacate the room where the co**se was and he went in there with Peter, James and John as well as the father and mother of the deceased.

This was one of the greatest miracles Jesus would perform. But Jesus only allowed 5 people to witness the miracle live. Jesus did not want the news to spread and that is why he restricted the number to 5 only.

Try to imagine that any of us clergy today could raise people from the dead. We would have put banners, posters and flyers all across town on anything that cannot resist, put ads on TV and radio for the masses to know what we are doing. If fact if thousands can watch a single miracle like raising the dead, that is the biggest publicity we needed for our ministry.

Not so for our Lord Jesus. He raised the dead discreetly, out of compassion, period.

INNER CIRCLE

Mark 5:37
And He permitted no one to accompany Him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.

Jesus had an inner circle apart from the twelve disciples. There were of course other disciples apart from those he personally called. These three who formed the inner circle were Peter James and John. We see this inner circle when he took them on the mountain where Jesus was transfigured (Mark 9:2). We see this team in the Garden of Gethsemane, when he took these three to pray (Mark 14:33). These were very critical moments not shared by everyone.

In life we have people whom we know and they know us but they are part of the general public. Then there is a close knit of people that we really treasure, some of whom are relatives and others are friends. Then there are those who are very close whom you confide in and who when things are thick they are the first people you call upon. And they will drop everything and be there with you. They are always there.

In life we need the inner circle of friends or relatives.

KEEP ON BELIEVING

Mark 5:36
Overhearing but ignoring what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not be seized with alarm and struck with fear; only keep on believing.

The situation has seemingly changed irreversibly. The young girl who was on the brink of death has now actually died. Death has a sense of finality to it. Those who came to announce the news came to declare to the father that now there should be a change in the course of action. Impliedly, they were saying that they should now start preparing for a funeral. Jesus ignored what he heard and simply told the father not to be afraid but instead to believe.

Most of us tend to lose heart when we are faced with a situation that looks hopeless. Jesus was quick to respond to the message of death by telling the father not to be afraid but to believe. This same message he told Mary and Martha at the tomb of Lazarus. This was another impossible situation, but not in the face of the author of life himself.

Whatever situation we face, as people who believe in Jesus, let us still place our faith in him and leave the matter in His hands. Keep on believing.

"WHY BOTHER?"

Mark 5:35
While He was still speaking, there came some from the ruler's house, who said [to Jairus], Your daughter has died. Why bother and distress the Teacher any further?

Jesus was on the way to the home of Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue to cure his daughter who was on the brink of death. While they were on the way, a message came saying that she was no more. The messengers who brought the news felt Jesus should not be bothered by this
matter any more. Hence, their "Why bother?" advice.

As far as the messengers were concerned, it was logical to ask such a question. However, it was heartless to speak like this. They should have simply reported of the death and kept quiet. But they insensitively went further with their logical question.

When we are in dire situations, it is not up to us to figure out how Jesus will sort out a problem, or present an impossible situation and come to a conclusion. Let us let Jesus deal with it.

EXERCISING FAITH

Mark 5:28
For she kept saying, If I only touch His garments, I shall be restored to health.

For twelve years she suffered silently. She had been to different healers to seek help but she did not get relief. Then she heard about Jesus. And she believed in her heart that if only she touched the hem of his garment she would be made whole. And so on this day when Jesus was passing by, going to the house of Jairus, she thought this was her opportunity to get her healing. She joined the crowd and made sure she got close enough to touch his garment discretely. And when she did she immediately got healed.

Jesus immediately knew that someone had touched her and so He asked who touched him. The disciples wondered why it should matter that someone touched him when a crowd of people was pressing him on all sides. She disclosed herself. Jesus said to her that her faith had made her whole.
This unnamed woman who is identified by her problem got healed because she exercised faith that Jesus would heal her. And she was.

Faith in God is a necessary element in activating our healing. Of course, not just healing but answers to our different prayers. We do not know why others who equally exercise faith do not get healing or answers to their prayers. One thing we know is that faith like that of this woman brought healing (an answer) to her.

THE POWER OF A TESTIMONY

Mark 5:20
And he departed and began to publicly proclaim in Decapolis [the region of the ten cities] how much Jesus had done for him, and all the people were astonished and marveled.

Just like Jesus had told him, the man who had been freed from demonic possession, went out to Decapolis and testified what Jesus had done for him. Notably the hearers were astonished to hear his story of his change. As you would imagine, people knew him more or less as a mad man, given how the demons tormented him. Now to see him as a sane person and speaking about his freedom through Jesus must have been the newest sensation in town.

A person may argue with a theology. A person may agree or disagree with a particular religious personality. But how does anyone argue with visible evidence of change that is in front of their eyes, that is attributable to someone like Jesus?
