Canon John Liston, one of the most faithful and dedicated members of the cathedral team whose outstanding service over more than 15 years ensured that so many musicians, singers, choirs and orchestras experienced the warmest welcome.

John, with his wife Jenni also made it possible for people to join the cathedral worship online from the first Sunday of lockdown. He was the architect of the cathedral website that is visited my hundreds of people every week.

Our debt of gratitude to John is enormous.

We are all in shock after the passing of John Liston. Here he is, where we so often saw him, at the sound and lighting desk during the Festival. NWIMF has lost a very dear friend in John… so much more than a valued colleague and supporter. He was such a kind, generous and thoughtful man whose friendship meant a great deal to all of us. Nothing was ever too much trouble for John. He gave his time and support freely and wholeheartedly, so often going above and beyond simply because he cared deeply about the Festival and the people involved in it. His warmth, generosity and willingness to help touched so many of us, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have had him as part of the Festival family. John leaves a very special place in our hearts and in the story of the Festival, and he will be remembered with great affection, gratitude and love. We are thinking of you all the time Jenni, Brannon & Tal - thank you for all you are doing to continue to help us. It won’t be the same without you John. Thank you so much for everything ❤️

🏆 Join us for the Pendine Young Musician of Wales Grand Final at the North Wales International Music Festival on Wednesday 16 September at 7pm! Watch Wales’ most exciting young musical talent compete for the prestigious Pendine Trophy, with a special performance from our 2025 winner, Rufus.

🎶 Now in its third year, the competition celebrates young musicians born or living in Wales, giving them the chance to perform at St Asaph Cathedral, one of Wales’ greatest acoustic spaces. Artistic Director describes it as “a unique opportunity for young musicians…to showcase their talents at the North Wales International Music Festival.”

🌟 The competition is generously supported by Mario Kreft MBE and Gill Kreft through the Pendine Arts and Community Trust. As part of Pendine’s 40th anniversary, we’re delighted they will continue their support for the next five years.

This year marks a very special milestone for NEW Sinfonia as the orchestra celebrates their 15th year of their foundation (including many of those years in collaboration with our Festival). Year on year, NEW Sinfonia has brought extraordinary new commissions and unforgettable performances to our Festival and to St Asaph Cathedral.

On Thursday 17 September join NEW Sinfonia and conductor Robert Guy for a kaleidoscope of brilliant music celebrating animals in music, culminating in Prokofiev’s much-loved Peter and the Wolf, marking the work’s 90th anniversary.

This exciting programme will feature music by Grieg, Ravel, Sibelius and Rimsky-Korsakov alongside three exciting NWIMF commissions. With narration by Classic FM’s presenter Zeb Soanes and BSL interpretation by Rachel Green, this promises to be a truly special celebration of orchestral music for all ages.
