🎶 My Favourite Hymn 🎶

Fowey Church Pastoral Minister, Ann Munford shares with us why Lord, Thy Word Abideth means so much to her.

'Lord, Thy Word abideth,
And our footsteps guideth.'

This lovely hymn was written by Henry Williams Baker between 1861-1867. The word 'abideth' means remains or endures - a reassuring thought when so much around us changes. Whatever life brings, God’s promises remain a source of hope.

This hymn was the first one I learnt by heart at school, in Portsmouth. I was about 9yrs old and I was always singing this hymn at home.

The hymn speaks of storms and dark clouds, images that may feel familiar when we face worry, loss or uncertainty. Its gentle message is that God’s word can bring light to our path, even when we cannot see very far ahead.

It is also a prayer that, through reading and listening, we may draw closer to God, allowing his words to shape our lives and the love we share with others.

Around 500 years ago, William Tyndale was determined that people should be able to read the Bible in English, rather than relying on clergy to explain the Latin Scriptures to them.

In 1526, his English translation of the New Testament was printed in Germany and thousands of copies were smuggled into England, despite being banned by the Catholic church and state authorities.

“I have here translated (brothers and sisters most dear and tenderly beloved in Christ) the New Testament for your spiritual edifying, consolation and solace.”

He was imprisoned and executed in 1536, but his work lived on, helping to shape the English Bibles we read today.

His determination has left us a precious gift: the freedom to read Scripture for ourselves and discover the hope, comfort and encouragement it offers.

On Sunday 18th October, we were delighted to welcome Archdeacon Helen Williams to both our 9am and 10.30am services, held in our beautifully decorated church.

During the 10.30am service, Helen shared her personal journey to faith and her calling to ordained ministry. She then preached on the well-known Bible passage from Matthew 22:21:

“Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.”

Archdeacon Helen reminded us that we are made in God’s image and belong entirely to Him. She also encouraged us to remember that the money we give to the church helps support its mission and spread God’s Word.

Archdeacon Helen was battling a cough and cold, so we were especially grateful that she was able to join us, and that her voice held out throughout her sermon!

Thank you, Archdeacon Helen, for sharing your story, your wisdom and your faith with us. It was a real pleasure to welcome you.
