Islamic Reminder: Be Kind to Your Family
The Best of You Are Those Who Are Best to Their Families
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
Your true character is not measured only by how kindly you treat strangers, but also by how you treat the people who share your home.
Our families are among the greatest blessings Allah has given us. Yet sometimes we show patience and respect to others while those closest to us experience our anger, harsh words, and impatience.
Allah Almighty says:
“And live with them in kindness.”
(Surah An-Nisa 4:19)
Our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
«خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِهِ، وَأَنَا خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِي»
“The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best of you to my family.”
(Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3895 – Sahih)
Brothers and sisters, true good character begins at home. Our families deserve our best manners, not what remains of our patience after a long day.
When Aisha (رضي الله عنها) was asked what the Prophet ﷺ did at home, she replied:
«كَانَ يَكُونُ فِي مِهْنَةِ أَهْلِهِ»
“He used to serve his family.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 676)
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
«إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الْأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ»
“Indeed, Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in all matters.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6927; Sahih Muslim 2165)
Dear parents: Your children need your love, patience, guidance, and attention. Your words can remain in their hearts for years.
Dear husbands and wives: Marriage requires mercy, appreciation, respect, forgiveness, and support during difficult times.
Dear children: Honour your parents, appreciate their sacrifices, and speak to them with kindness.
Allah says:
“And speak to people good words.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:83)
Let us remember five simple actions: speak gently, appreciate one another, forgive mistakes, spend meaningful time together, and make our homes places of prayer and remembrance of Allah.
A powerful reminder:
Do not let your family fear your anger more than they feel your love. Be the reason your home is filled with peace, not fear.
Before sleeping tonight, ask yourself: Have I made my family feel loved, respected, and appreciated today?
If you have hurt someone, apologize. If you have neglected someone, reconnect. Do not wait until it is too late.
Allah teaches us this beautiful du‘a:
﴿رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا﴾
“Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.”
(Surah Al-Furqan 25:74)
May Allah fill our homes with love, mercy, patience, and blessings. May He strengthen our marriages, protect our children, bless our parents, and make us among those who are best to their families.
Ameen, Ya Rabbal-‘Alameen.
