The Gospels contain some of the most important texts in Scripture, and few rise above the reiteration of the Old Testament Shema—the command to love the one true God. Matthew 22:37 elucidates our central obligation to love the Lord with all that we have: heart, soul, and mind. This divine demand reinforces that cold, dispassionate obedience will not suffice. The Lord claims our most ardent devotion and fidelity.

In defiance of the dream once given to him by God, Nebuchadnezzar sets up a golden statue and demands worship on pain of death by fire for any who resist. Three do--Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego--and when asked what God will save them, they answer with the same faith in the one true God exhibited by Daniel in chapters prior. What follows is among the most memorable miracles in all scripture, with clear lessons for the Christian life today.

If you are wondering whether Christian hope is worth the risk, or whether it can sustain you through life’s darkest seasons, this message is for you.

This sermon explores the foundation, content, and effect of Christian hope from 1 John 3:1–3. Christian hope is not wishful thinking, vague optimism, or emotional escape. Rather, it is God-centered: grounded in the Father’s love, fixed on the Son’s appearing, and sustained by the Spirit’s grace. Because God has made us His children in Christ, we can face the present with assurance and the future with confidence. Our hope looks forward to the appearing of Christ, when we shall see Him as He is and be made like Him in glory. Until that day, this hope purifies our lives, strengthens us in holiness, and anchors our souls in the promise of seeing our Saviour face to face.

Yesterday our Youth Choir sang a Mother's Day tribute. We thank God for mothers. 🩷

"But when you stay by my side,
Hear my stories at night
And teach me to trust in God’s love.
You give me a hug,
Maybe two
And you say 'I love you,'
Then I think you’re doing enough."
