OMI - Assumption Province

This past weekend the cluster of parishes cared for my the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate OMI - Assumption Province in Saskatchewan said their final goodbye to the Oblates after a faithful 92 years of ministry. The parishes will now be under the care of Fr. George who will continue the Oblate legacy as he begins a new chapter for these communities.

From July 4th to July 18th, nearly 600 brownies, guides, scouts, venturers and their leaders gathered in the Kaszuby area, in the Ottawa Valley. They are linked to the Polish Scouting Association in Canada. Accompanying them as chaplain in the second week of camp was Fr. Pawel Ratajczak OMI. Fr. Marcin Serwin OMI, the chaplain of the Polish girl scouts and boy scouts in Canada, also visited the camps. The scouts took part in overnight camping trips, canoeing, campfires, building skills and confidence. Service to God also plays a part in scouting formation, and scouts had an opportunity to participate in Mass and confession.

Oblates of Assumption Province once again took part in annual Study Days. This year, these took place once again at Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre in Mississauga, between June 15-19.

The man who made us think, reflect and perhaps even challenge ourselves was Fr. Henryk Sławiński, a homiletics professor from Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

Fr. Henryk Sławiński about himself - 37 years of priesthood. 1,924 Sundays have passed. Delivered at least 2,000 homilies. Celebrated over thirteen thousand Holy Masses. Have heard confessions of tens of thousands of converted sinners. It is hard to count the hours spent with children, youth, and engaged couples during catechesis, and with the faithful in the parish office, the hospital, the social welfare home, at the cemetery, or in parishioners’ homes during Christmas caroling or other visits.

Do these numbers have any significance? Indeed, they do. They show how socially important, how multifaceted, and how labor-intensive the priest’s ministry is. The value of the priesthood cannot be quantified. It is expressed not so much in what we do, but above all in who we are. Agere sequitur esse.

Our life and our ministry have meaning because, and only because, the earth one day became worthy to bear the God-man, Jesus Christ. If not for Jesus, our life would have no meaning. Thanks to him, it has meaning in this life and in eternity.

Our life is an attempt at imitatio Christi. Many of us have read the book beloved by John Paul II and many other saints: The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis. Imitating Christ is the culmination of having previously come to know and love Him.

Our priestly ministry began at the moment of ordination. It was then carried out in various places, but within one Church. We serve a single purpose—the salvation of people through the diversity of our ministry. And I think each of us has experienced that the path of life often leads uphill, in the struggle against external and internal adversities. On this path, we are never alone.

Thus, over the last few days, we enjoy each other’s company, share experiences from the past few months and partake deeply of the communal spirit that make us Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

During the last Mass, the Superior General’s decree regarding the extension of the term of office of the Provincial, Fr. Jacek Nosowicz, OMI, was also read; the new Provincial Council was installed; and several new obediences were announced for our confreres.

Aleksandra Kaszkur – new Honorary Oblate.
“I was in shock and couldn’t believe it; I didn’t feel I deserved it" - Aleksandra said when she heard from Father Adam about her nomination and being accepted to the community of Honorary Oblates (HOMI).
What was the beginning of her journey to becoming an Honorary Oblate? “We became involved in parish life when Fr. Adam Filas OMI became the pastor. He also began construction of the new church in Brampton. That’s when my husband and I decided to move there and joined the Mission Group, which Fr. Adam had also founded. At that time, our involvement consisted of helping to organize parish picnics and raising funds for the church construction. When the children were a bit older, I decided to get more involved in the Mission Group at the request of Mrs. Bożena. Around that time, an missionary from Madagascar—Father Marek Ochlak OMI—contacted Father Adam, asking for help with the Adoption of Heart. The goal was to find sponsors for ten children who would provide them with the supplies needed for school and food. We managed to find these sponsors, and soon more children and sponsors joined the program. Today, we support approximately 200 children in Madagascar and 30 in Haiti. A few years ago, at the request of the late Fr. Ludwik Stryczek OMI from Cameroon, we launched a new initiative, this time the Adoption of Heart of Seminarians, to financially support their studies.”

The canonical novitiate officially began today in Godfrey, Illinois, as two young men took an important step in their discernment of religious life with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Jose Carlos, from Assumption Province, and Francis, from the U.S. Province, began their novitiate year, a time dedicated to prayer, formation, and deeper reflection on God's call in their lives.

Throughout the year, the novices will grow in their understanding of the Oblate charism, experience community life, and continue discerning their vocation as members of the Oblate family. The novitiate provides a unique opportunity to come to know the Oblate community more deeply while strengthening their relationship with Christ and their commitment to serving the Church and those most in need.

Corpus Christi 2026

The Corpus Christi processions, attended by large numbers of our parishioners, provided an opportunity to bear witness to our faith and to bring God’s blessing to various parts of our parishes. For, as our Constitutions say:
“The Eucharist, source and summit of the Church’s life, is at the heart of our life and action”. (C33)

On this day, the entire Oblate Family celebrates the feast of its founder, St. Eugene de Mazenod. Oblates from the GTA and surrounding areas gathered in Brampton on this day to give thanks for the Founder’s charism and to pray for the Congregation and the Province.
