This Sunday we continue through the letters to the churches in Revelation with Jesus' words to the church in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia had “little strength” and faced tremendous pressure, yet Jesus commended them for continuing to hold fast to him. What did this weak church know—and what were they holding onto—that allowed them to remain faithful when the current against them was so strong?

As we look at Revelation 3:7–13, we'll consider what their example has to say to us about perseverance, knowing Christ, and the gift of helping one another remain faithful when we feel tired or pulled off course.

What happens when following Jesus begins to cost us something?

The Christians in Thyatira were part of a loving, faithful, and growing church. But they also lived in a world where work, relationships, social connections, and religious expectations were deeply intertwined. And under pressure, some had begun to believe that compromise was simply part of getting by.

So, what do we do when faithfulness to Jesus threatens something we value — our security, our relationships, our reputation, or even our livelihood? And where might divided loyalties be taking root in our own hearts?

What happens when tolerance begins to lead us into compromise?

The Christians in Pergamum lived in a city filled with competing loyalties, beliefs, and pressures. They had demonstrated remarkable courage and remained faithful to Jesus even when it cost them dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, they had also begun tolerating ideas and practices that were slowly pulling them away from him.

So, how can we remain gracious and loving toward the people around us without allowing the values of the culture around us to reshape our faithfulness to Jesus?

The church in Smyrna knew what it meant to live under pressure. In a city fiercely loyal to Rome, their allegiance to Jesus brought suffering, opposition, and significant loss. Yet in the middle of it all, Jesus spoke a word they desperately needed to hear.

What might it look like for us to remain faithful to Jesus when we find ourselves under pressure?

Dear Church is an eight-week series exploring the seven letters found in the opening chapters of Revelation. These letters were addressed to ancient churches facing very real challenges—pressure, discouragement, compromise, suffering, spiritual drift, and the temptation to give up.

In these letters, Jesus is pictured as walking among his churches. He sees what is happening within them. He knows their faithfulness and their failures, their courage and their struggles. He affirms what is good, confronts them where they are unfaithful, and calls each church toward repentance, endurance, renewal, and hope.

Throughout this series, we will consider what these ancient letters have to say to us today—as individuals, as a community, and as a church seeking to follow Jesus faithfully in our own time and place.
