A picnic isn’t meant to be rushed. In a world that celebrates “busy-ness”, Jesus invites us to lay down our burdens and find rest. Sunday will also be a baptism Sunday — so we will reflect on God’s gifts of rest and the deep peace that comes from trusting we are held in God’s care. This summer, pull up a spot on the blanket as we explore what it means to live a “Picnic Faith” — a faith that gathers people together, nourishes us for the journey, and helps us discover what matters most. Through stories, songs, scripture, and conversation, we’ll celebrate God’s abundant welcome and the simple gifts that sustain us.

And every good picnic begins with an invitation. Jesus tells a story about a banquet where everyone is welcome, especially those who never expected a seat at the table. This Celebration Sunday, we’ll kick off our summer series by exploring the radical hospitality of God and what it means to truly belong. We’ll also celebrate our children, youth, and Sunday School volunteers.

On Sunday, we’ll consider the story of Sarah, who, having been childless for many years, was told in her old age that God was going to bring her a child. The idea was so preposterous that all Sarah could do was to laugh — at God! But God delivered on this promise, and at a very advanced age, Sarah finally became a mother. Again and again, we are reminded that God is aleady at work bringing new possibilities to life.

Pentecost. An occasion of the church year that doesn’t get as much attention as Advent, Christmas, or Easter, but it is an occasion that is closely aligned to our daily life — because that’s when the Spirit appeared to signify God’s presence with us forever. Today we’ll identify with the disciples in the joy of receiving the Holy Spirit, and refresh our awareness of the work for which the spirit calls and empowers us.
