Good violence?

Those who make use of coercive force to achieve their ends, have long been able to cite scripture in their attempt to justify their means.

There is a lot of violence in scripture. Which is what we would expect, given there is a lot of violence in the world and in the history of humanity.

However, whose violence it is matters. If it is God who is violent, and God is good, then it would seem there must be such a thing as good violence.

There is most decidedly a myth of good violence. But the gospel is the debunking of that myth.

It is time we became proficient at reading our sacred texts in a way that reveals the violent, and makes clear the nonviolence of God.
