Re: Church Building Temporary Closure, effective immediately
This morning, during the storm, we have had damage to one of our church walls, between/above the café hall and chapel. We evacuated the building immediately (during the Sunday service) and called the SES. We held a meeting on-site with stakeholders and agreed on a plan that covered: ensuring that all risks were addressed, safety (to people and property), as well as a number of other important things.
As a result, the whole church site has been shut down, until further notice. There is no access allowed to any part of the church building, property or carpark area.
We expect this shut down will be in place for a minimum of a week, whilst we carry out a full structural and safety inspection, conduct the necessary ‘make safe’ emergency repairs and arrange other longer-term repairs. Please note this building shutdown may go on longer than a week.
Our hope is that safe access to the back hall/kitchen areas, will be possible in 1-2 weeks’ time and we will let you know more as soon as we can. Please note, this will be dependent on the structural investigations carried out. Access to the café hall, chapel and other areas may take longer.
The good news is that Westcity is not a church built on or around our building, and we have a thriving church community that operates Monday through to Sunday in many places, spaces and ways. So stay tuned for more creative invitations to come on how we will continue to 'be the church', during this temporary building shut down.
We will be in meetings over the next few days, prayerfully planning logistics and details. It's times like these that our church community shines and comes together.....we have faithfully seen this 'coming together' many times before.
Let's lean into God together and be expectant for what's in store over the coming days and weeks. As said in the service this morning, "the Spirit has many ways of surprising us, in good ways!"
Special thanks to everyone for evacuating so well this morning and for your ongoing understanding, support and prayers. Appreciation to all those who came together this morning so well on emergency/safety protocols, and stewarding us through each of the steps so well.
With grateful, expectant and open hearts,
The Westcity Team
