Prayer for Youth Day – South Africa
Psalm 78:4-7
We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation
the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.
He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
Jeremiah 29:7
Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we remember before You the events of 16 June 1976, when young people in our nation rose up in protest against injustice, and many suffered and died in the pursuit of dignity, opportunity, and a better future. As we commemorate Youth Day, we acknowledge both the courage of that generation and the deep pain that marks our national story. Now, fifty years later, Lord, we confess that we are still far from the justice, equality, and flourishing that so many longed for and gave their lives for. We still see brokenness in education, inequality among communities, and uncertainty and despair among many of our young people. Yet we also hear Your Word, that You will not hide Your truth from the next generation, but will declare Your mighty works so that they might set their hope in You. And You call us to seek the peace and welfare of the city where You have placed us. So we pray for South Africa: bring healing where there is still deep wound and division, justice where there is ongoing inequality, and hope where there is discouragement. We pray especially for the youth of our nation - that they would not be defined by frustration or loss, but would encounter Christ, the true foundation and living hope. And Lord, make us faithful in our generation - faithful in prayer, faithful in witness, and faithful in seeking the good of our nation - until Your purposes are fulfilled among us. Amen.
