New Police Station in Mitchells Plain

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) Western Cape welcomes the new police station currently under construction in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain. The station is scheduled for completion in November 2026.

This long-awaited development represents a crucial investment in the safety and security of residents who have endured the devastating effects of gang violence, drug trafficking, robberies, and other serious crimes for far too long.

A modern and well-resourced police station will strengthen law enforcement capacity, improve response times, increase visibility in crime hotspots, and provide a better working environment for police officers. It also sends a strong message that government recognises the urgent need to combat criminality in Mitchells Plain.

The ACDP believes that safer communities create opportunities for economic growth, education, and family stability. We remain committed to supporting initiatives that restore law and order and protect law-abiding citizens from the scourge of crime.

Statement: Under-reported R**e Cases

The African Christian Democratic Party in the Western Cape highlights a deeply concerning trend in the reporting and prosecution of statutory r**e cases. Over a five-year period, from the 2020/2021 to the 2024/2025 financial years, 3,232 cases of statutory r**e were reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS). Alarmingly, 1,853 of these cases were withdrawn, and only 14% resulted in convictions.

Statutory r**e refers to sexual activity involving a minor, where consent is not legally recognised. In South Africa, the age of consent is 16 years.

Christians stresses that sexual crimes against minors are widely under-reported, with many cases being withdrawn either before reaching court or during legal proceedings.

Key Barriers to Reporting
Several factors continue to discourage the reporting of these crimes:
•Fear of stigma and social shame
•Lack of trust in the criminal justice system
•Cultural beliefs and pressures
•Financial dependence on perpetrators

The high rate of case withdrawals is particularly troubling. Christians notes that individuals and families who withdraw such cases may be acting outside the law, thereby undermining justice and accountability.

He calls on all stakeholders—families, communities, and authorities—to prioritise the protection of minors and ensure that all incidents of r**e are reported. The r**e of minors has lifelong psychological and emotional consequences, stripping victims of their innocence and leaving lasting trauma.
