What is a human being worth — and who gets to say?
A few weeks ago Themba, who opens this series tomorrow, stood in the old slave market of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Fifteen steps below the street there is a chamber where human beings were held in the dark for days — not out of carelessness, but as preparation. The ones who survived it fetched a better price. He walked out with one conviction he couldn't shake: that auction never really closed. It rebranded.
It runs on our timelines, where faces are rated in silence. On our campuses. In our relationships, our marriages, our mirrors. Most of us have been priced this week — we just didn't see the tag.
Tomorrow, we close the bidding.
