6 MARCH 2026 EVENING PRAYER

Enter gently into this moment of prayer.
Notice how you are now.
Open your heart.
Soften your body.
Become aware of God’s loving gaze resting gently on you.
On us.
Open your heart to receive
From the One
who waits;
who knows;
who hears.
And who will not be outdone in generosity.

When you are ready I invite you to pray with this scripture text.

A LIGHT FOR THE NATIONS

Isaiah: 49

Listen, far-flung islands,
pay attention, faraway people:
God put me to work from the day I was born.
The moment I entered the world he named me.
He gave me speech that would cut and pe*****te.
He kept his hand on me to protect me.
He made me his straight arrow
and hid me in his quiver.
He said to me, “You’re my dear servant,
Israel, through whom I’ll shine.”

But I said, “I’ve worked for nothing.
I’ve nothing to show for a life of hard work.
Nevertheless, I’ll let God have the last word.
I’ll let him pronounce his verdict.”

“And now,” God says,
this God who took me in hand
from the moment of birth to be his servant,
To bring Jacob back home to him,
to set a reunion for Israel—
What an honor for me in God’s eyes!
That God should be my strength!
He says, “But that’s not a big enough job for my servant—
just to recover the tribes of Jacob,
merely to round up the strays of Israel.
I’m setting you up as a light for the nations
so that my salvation becomes global!”

God, Redeemer of Israel, The Holy of Israel,
says to the despised one, kicked around by the nations,
slave labor to the ruling class:
“Kings will see, get to their feet—the princes, too—
and then fall on their faces in homage
Because of God, who has faithfully kept his word,
The Holy of Israel, who has chosen you.”

A PRAYER FOR THIS NIGHT

God be with us this night.
Give us your wisdom.
Your love.
Your strength.
In this time of such great
conflict and injustice.
Make us instruments of your peace.
Help us build a just society for all.

We pray for a peaceful night’s rest that we may awaken with renewed energy and hope to work to bring about a new reality in our world.

Amen.

1 MARCH EVENING PRAYER

Become still
Quieten your breath.
Listen to the sounds outside,
or to the silence of the night.
Notice how do I feel?
Open your heart.
Soften your body.
Ask for the grace you need this night.
Become aware of God’s loving gaze resting gently on you.
On us.
Open your heart to receive
From the One
who waits;
who knows;
who hears.
And who will not be outdone in generosity.

When you are ready, here are some words that you may find helpful to pray with.

ONLY IN LOVE

Only in love can I find you my God. In love the gates of my soul spring open, allowing me to breathe a new air of freedom and forget my own petty self. In long my whole being streams forth out of the rigid confines of narrowness and anxious self-assertion, which makes me a prisoner of my own poverty and emptiness. In love all the powers of my soul flow out toward You, wanting never more to return, but to lose themselves completely in You, since by your love you are the inmost centre of my heart, closer to me than I am to myself.

(Karl Rahner)

-Read the text slowly two or three times.
-Notice what word or phrase draws you.
Enter into heart-to-heart conversation with God as one friend speaks to another.

A PRAYER FOR THIS NIGHT

God be with us this night.
Give us your wisdom.
Your love.
Your strength.
Comfort all who are afraid or in pain.
The sick, the bereaved, the lonely.
Those who are feeling depressed or anxious.
Those who face financial hardship.
Help us sustain our efforts to reach out,
To rebuild,
To protect,
To heal.
Help us to do what we can, with what we have, where we are.
Make us instruments of your peace.
Help us build a just society for all.

Amen.

EVENING PRAYER 27 FEBRUARY 2026

Take some time now
to look back with God on the day that has passed.
How have you felt the presence of the Creator today?
Where have you experienced an increase in faith, hope or love?
Where have you felt yourself gently challenged?
What do you most want to give thanks for?
Spend some time savouring those moments and giving thanks for them.

When you are ready you may like to pray with these words:

The Call

If you could see
the journey whole
you might never
undertake it;
might never dare
the first step
that propels you
from the place
you have known
toward the place
you know not.

Call it
one of the mercies
of the road:
that we see it
only by stages
as it opens
before us,
as it comes into
our keeping
step by
single step.

There is nothing
for it
but to go
and by our going
take the vows
the pilgrim takes:
to be faithful to
the next step;
to rely on more
than the map;
to heed the signposts
of intuition and dream;

to follow the star
that only you
will recognize;
to keep an open eye
for the wonders that
attend the path;
to press on
beyond distractions
beyond fatigue
beyond what would
tempt you
from the way.

There are vows
that only you
will know;
the secret promises
for your particular path
and the new ones
you will need to make
when the road
is revealed
by turns
you could not
have foreseen.

Keep them, break them,
make them again:
each promise becomes
part of the path;
each choice creates
the road
that will take you
to the place
where at last
you will kneel
to offer the gift
most needed—
the gift that only you
can give—
before turning to go
home by
another way.
— Jan Richardson, For Those Who Have Far to Travel,

Read the blessing a few times and see if there is a word or phrase that strikes you.

Stay with it letting it settle in your spirit.

Talk with God about it or just rest in what God has shown you.

PRAYER FOR OTHERS

Take a moment now to bring to mind anyone you know who is struggling and who needs our prayers. Hold them in the light of God’s loving gaze. Now release them into God’s care this night.

As we end our prayer tonight hear these word of encouragement:

Let nothing disturb you, nothing frighten you, all things are passing, God is unchanging. Patience gains all; nothing is lacking to those who have God: God alone is sufficient.” (St Teresa of Avila)

AMEN.

EVENING PRAYER 17 FEBRUARY

Gently allow yourself to come into the awareness of the One who yearns for time with you - to nurture you, to care for you and to receive you with all the joys and concerns you hold today.

Let yourself be received by Love.

Relax and settle into this special time with God, connected with others who are praying alongside you.

REFLECTING ON YOUR DAY

Take a moment to allow God to remind you of one gift or blessing of this day. Hold it in the sacred space of your and God’s shared memory. Savour it and hold it. Give thanks to God for it.

Perhaps there is a moment of sadness or regret. Bring that into the loving healing gaze of God. Until you can let it go into God’s hands.

WORDS TO PONDER

When you are ready I invite you to pray with psalm 116 translated by Nan Merrill.

Receive my love, O Beloved, You who hear my voice and my supplication.

You incline your ear to me, and I will call upon You with trust
for as long as I live.
When the snares of fear encompass me, when the pangs of loneliness envelop me,
I suffer distress and anguish.
Then I call upon you, my Rock.

Gracious are You and just; the Heart of all hearts is merciful and forgiving.
You preserve the simple; though I am humbled, You lift me up.
Return, O my soul, to your rest; for You, O Loving Companion Presence,
bestow grace upon grace, a balm for my soul.

You raise me up to new life; You dry my tears,
and guide my feet on straight paths.
Now, I walk hand in hand with Love in the land of the awakened ones.
I keep my faith, even in times of great turmoil;
I invite others to awaken to the joy of your Presence.

PRAYER FOR OTHERS

We pray for all suffering heart ache and heart break at this time in relationships. And for families who are struggling with conflict. May they be held close and gifted with your consoling peace.

As many in South Africa grapple with the frustrations and anxieties of water struggles help us to remain deeply grounded in you.

Bless us this Shrove Tuesday night as we prepare to enter the journey of Lent.

EVENING PRAYER 12 February

Welcome into this moment of prayer as we turn our face to the one who has been waiting longingly for us to notice that longing that is drawing us.

GRATITUDE

Take some time now to look back with God on the day that has passed.
How have you felt the presence of the Creator today?
Where have you experienced an increase in faith, hope or love?
Where have you felt yourself gently challenged?
What do you most want to give thanks for?
Spend some time savouring those moments and giving thanks for them.

Psalm 91 (Adaptation of Nan Merrill’s Translation.)

Psalmist: Those who dwell in the shelter of Infinite Light, who abide in the wings of Infinite Love, will raise their voices in praise: “My refuge and my strength, in You alone will I trust.

For you deliver me from the webs of fear, from all that separates and divides; You protect me as an eagle shields its young. Your faithfulness is sure, like an arrow set upon the mark.

I will not fear the shadows of the night, nor the confusion that comes by day, nor the dreams that awaken me from sleep, nor the daily changes that life brings…

God: Because you cleave to Me in love, I will deliver you; I will protect you who call upon my Name. When you call to Me, I will answer you; I will be with you in times of trouble. I will rescue you and reverence your life. All through the years will I dwell in your heart, as Loving Companion Presence, forever.

Read the scripture a few times and see if there is a word or phrase that strikes you.

Stay with it letting it settle in your spirit.

Talk with God about it or just rest in what God has shown you.

11 February

Evening Prayer: Holding the day with God.

As the day draws to a close,
Find a quiet place,
light a candle,
take a moment to pause
and experience God's loving presence enfolding you.

Notice with God
the gifts and blessings of today...
People...
experiences...
moments of beauty,
or unexpected kindnesses.
A work meeting that flowed
more easily than expected.
An email or what's app
that lifted your spirits.
Remember those moments
when you felt at peace,
generous, energised
enough for the demands of the day.
Moments that were challenging,
but where you felt God close.

Take a moment now
to savour
them with God.

Then notice with God,
the moments in the day that jarred -
perhaps when you felt helpless
and distressed.
by the state of the world.
When you were exhausted
by one too many things
on the do-to list;
When you struggled
with technology glitches
or frustrating admin tasks.
Perhaps when you ran out of patience
with a colleague...
or your child.

When you sit with God now
what do you notice?
What did you need
in those moments
when the day was hard?
Maybe you still need
something right now
from God.
A word of comfort
or encouragement.
Perhaps a word of forgiveness
or an invitation to just rest
and let God hold it.

What about tomorrow?
What is in the diary,
and what gifts do you imagine
you might need
to enter into it
generously,
and peacefully
in partnership with God.
Take a moment to ask for
what you need.
Whether calm, or patience,
or energy to get through a busy day.
Know that God always
wants to gift us with what we need.

And now wrap a blessing
of God's peace and love
around you like a shawl.

Rest in the arms of God.
the God who loves you.

AMEN.
