Central Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1883 by the Rev. In 1883 and declared " On this rock we will build our church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." The church is recognized by the "Wilmington Historic Society" as the oldest structured Baptist African American Church in the city. There are a few older ones however they have been rebuilt; Central has the oldest origin

al structure from 1883 and 95% original. The church has a pew donated by the founder of Shaw University in 1883, the late Rev. An historic former pastor was Rev. Allen Kirk a target of the white supremacy group was the pastor of Central in 1898 during the massacre. Rev. Kirk is the author of "A Statement of Facts Concerning the Bloody Riot in Wilmington, N. Of Interest to Every Citizen of the United States". Kirk served as the head of the Ministerial Alliance in 1898 and gave Alex Manly to start the press. Among our many prominent pastors include the last Rev. Dr. Boone - Rev. Allen Kirk -. The first black board member of New Hanover Regional Hospital included life long member ; the late Deacon E. M. Butler and the late Deacon James Faison Sr. the grandfather of the Honorable Judge James Faison III. The late Dr. Roane was also a former lifetime member of Central and was the first black resident physician at New Hanover Regional Hospital. Numerous commencement services were held at Central Baptist Church for graduates nurses of Community Hospital that was once located across from the church before integrated with New Hanover Memorial Hospital. Former member the last Attorney Bond assisted the late Dr. Eaton in filing the desegregation lawsuit in New Hanover County.

This Memorial Day, I am also reflecting on the life and legacy of my father, ๐—๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—›. ๐—™๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป, ๐—๐—ฟ.

After graduating from ๐—ช๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—›๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น in 1946, he enlisted in the ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—”๐—ฟ๐—บ๐˜† and served in Japan under General Douglas MacArthur. He later attended ๐—”&๐—ง ๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฒ, ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—ก๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ต ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ ๐—”&๐—ง ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†, where he continued his service through Army ROTC and was honorably discharged as a ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜.

My fatherโ€™s life taught me the importance of faith, discipline, education, patriotism, and service to others.

His example continues to shape the values I carry with me today.

In Loving Memory of Ernest Nathaniel Simpson

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ernest Nathaniel Simpson, 66 of Currie, NC. Ernest went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 27, 2025. He has joined the heavenly choir, where we know โ€œThere will be singing over thereโ€ Please continue to pray for the Simpson family and the Currie community. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.
