Oakdale Cemetery

Oakdale Cemetery is one of Wilmington's most beautiful landscapes, where ornamental monuments, lush vegetation and rich history come to life.

Oakdale was part of the Rural Cemetery Movement that swept the US in the mid-Nineteenth Century making it the oldest rural cemetery in North Carolina. Oakdale is an active cemetery located in Historic Downtown Wilmington and is still conducting burials and selling plots. Oakdale Cemetery contains the graves of the movers and shakers of Wilmington, NC. Graves represent veterans from all wars and all branches of service, politicians, mayors, congressmen, and other notable historic figures.

May is Preservation Month!!!
Oakdale Cemetery was recently recognized with an Award of Merit from the Historic Wilmington Foundation at their Preservation Awards Ceremony. This was received as a result of the past months/years of work restoring approximately 1,000 brick foundations supporting monuments that were constructed by the cemetery from the 1860s - 1900s. The award also covers the past year’s reforestation efforts of planting over 1,000 trees throughout the property

HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR this SATURDAY 5/16!!!! Historical walking tours of North Carolina’s oldest rural cemetery will be given by local historian, Robin Triplett. Ms. Triplett will lead you on a journey through Oakdale and will delight you with many tales of those interred in the cemetery. Learn some local history from a long time Wilmingtonian. Tour is from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Cost of the tour is $10.00 per person (cash only please). Tours are cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

With a little help from our “Friends” !!!
Many thanks to some dedicated volunteers to help tie bows on to 180 Christmas Wreaths that were placed on graves today for the holiday season. We couldnt do this without you!!! The staff also enjoy this day as we are able to spread cheer and get into the spirit of the Christmas season. Many thanks to all those who purchased wreaths to place on family graves, we love providing this service every year. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!!
