Shir Hadash Synagogue

Shir Hadash Synagogue A dynamic synagogue serving the Jewish community in the north and northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Reconstructing Judaism is a progressive, egalitarian, inclusive movement that makes Judaism relevant to contemporary life while honoring Jewish tradition. Shir Hadash Synagogue is a creative Reconstructionist congregation led by Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow that has served the Jewish community in the north and northwest suburbs of Chicago since 1995. We welcome singles, couples, and all family conste

llations, including Interfaith and LGBT families. As reflected by our motto—Community, Creativity, and Caring—we celebrate our Jewish faith through creative worship, social action, music, arts, dance, and drama. We offer a wonderful one day a week religious school that meets on Sundays, dynamic bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah services, teen program, adult programming, and much more.

We have a little something special for our “20 and 30-somethings” on September 19. Come to Shir Hadash in Wheeling and hear our Rabbi blow the Shofar, before going to Finn McCool’s (373 W. Dundee Road) for a drink. Free to everyone, but you will buy your own preferred libation. Get to know Rabbi Schachar and other young people. Bring a friend, bring two friends…just come and enjoy!

Shir Hadashniks are so generous. Every year our High Holiday food drive helps over 100 people feed their families. This year we are extending it past Yom Kippur, all the way through Simchat Torah.

Shir Hadash welcomed an almost “standing-room-only” crowd of members and guests for our Selichot Havdalah service, featuring Gabriel Meyer, Leah Shoshanah, and Pastor Ken. The sanctuary, wrapped in subdued light and gentle music, invited a sense of calm and reflection as we entered this season of introspection. Afterward, we gathered in the community room for a spirited Oneg reception—full of conversation, connection, and the first spark of High Holiday energy. It was a meaningful beginning to our journey toward the Days of Awe.

Next week brings the arrival of Rosh Hashanah, and we’re excited to welcome the New Year together. Our Erev Rosh Hashanah and Rosh Hashanah Day 1 services will be held in the spacious community hall at St. Joseph the Worker, just across the street from Shir Hadash. There’s plenty of room for everyone to join us in celebration — but advance registration is required. Members always get High Holiday tickets for free — please make sure your membership is up to date. Whether you’re renewing, joining for the first time, or registering as a guest, we invite you to become a valued part of our progressive, welcoming Shir Hadash family.
