The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. – Mark 6:30-32
After returning from their assignment of preaching repentance, casting out demons, and healing many people, Jesus encouraged his apostles to go away to a quiet place and rest. Just like Jesus’ apostles, we also lead busy lives. Do we follow Jesus’ instruction? It may seem impossible with our hectic schedules to consider the luxury of unplugging for more than a moment.
Even if we need to schedule it like an appointment on our calendars, we need to dedicate time in our lives to break away from the daily hustle and bustle to rest. Whether it’s taking a leisurely walk, working a puzzle, listening to relaxing music, or losing yourself in a book, your time spent resting is never wasted.
Prayer: Restoring God, we commit to setting aside time in our daily lives to rest. Nudge us to be faithful in keeping this commitment. Help us to make this an important practice. Amen.
