1 Samuel 16 ~ “From the Pasture to the Palace” ~ Sunday morning, August 30, 2026

9 The heart of man plans his way,
but the Lord establishes his steps. - Proverbs 16:9

It’s been said, “Plan your work. Then work your plan.” Sounds good, doesn’t it? And it’s not a bad thing to have goals, plans and ambitions. But if you’re a Christ follower, you’d be wise to write those plans in pencil. Because chances are they’ll change. To be a Christian, is to be surrendered / yielded to God’s higher plans. So daily, we act on what we know and what has been revealed. And as we walk closely to the LORD (prayer, listening, time in the Word), He leads and guides us to where He wants us. David, the son of a man named Jesse, who lived in Bethlehem, was content to watch and shepherd the family’s flock of sheep. But more than a “plan” for his life, David embraced the “presence” of the Good Shepherd! He wrote and sang, “The LORD is my Shepherd, I lack nothing.” (Psalm 23:1) He lived one day at a time caring for the flock and enjoying the presence of the LORD.

Apparently, prioritizing God’s Presence turns out to be a good “plan.” Because God saw David’s heart – a heart that loved Him. And soon thereafter a series of events would unfold that would eventually lead to David moving from his pasture to the palace. His shepherd’s staff would be replaced with a King’s scepter.

What comes first for you; making your plans or being in the presence of the One who know the plans He has for you?

1 Samuel 16 ~ “Consider the Heart” ~ Sunday morning, August 23, 2026

“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:7

We’ve all heard it said, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” The meaning of that idiom or metaphor is this: The jacket or cover of the book might have an awesome picture or title. The back cover might be loaded with praises and recommendations from famous critics, authors or readers. But until YOU actually read the book yourself, you’ll never know what’s inside.

The Prophet Samuel was sent by God to anoint Israel’s next King. The previous King (Saul) looked the part and began his reign with a series of good leadership choices. But as time went on, he drifted further and further from God. His focus shifted from the LORD to pride, political power, gaining more possessions and people pleasing. The result was that God had rejected him as Israel’s King.

Samuel’s directive was to go to Bethlehem and consider the sons of a man named Jesse. The new King would be found here. As he walked past the sons of Jesse, Samuel’s eyes went immediately to Eliab. This guy looked like a King! But God reminded him – don’t judge the book by the cover! People do that. Even Godly people like Samuel can do that – but God does not.

God considers the heart!
