During the recent 2026 Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church, Ashley Hoover, a beloved Son of Hughes, was ordained as an Elder.
Ashley will become the minster of Gethsemane UMC in nearby Capitol Heights, MD in July.
He is the son of Gwendolyn Hoover (who made his stole) and our beloved Lloyd Hoover, who led Hughes Memorial's Music Ministry for many years before he passed away in 2015. Ashley's brother is Wesley Hoover.

Hughes Memorial UMC celebrated a Family & Friends Day on May 24 that filled the sanctuary with remembrance of our history and a challenge to work for our future. A message from our former pastor Rev. Constance (Connie) Smith about Jesus cursing a fig tree with no fruit (Mark 11:12-14,) stirred memories of our past experiences in the community, and challenged us to continue serving the community, regardless of our numbers, in faithfully continuing to serve God and His people. Our time hasn't passed; there is more for us to do!
An indoor cookout followed as it rained outside. We ate well, children played, eating snow cones, cookies, punch .. all the things that stir summer fun and memories.
Now that we've celebrated, and prayed for God's people, we're strengthened to serve our Far Northeast DC community even more faithfully, in this season of political unrest and stretched resources. Who's on board? We need you. Come join us and be part of the action. You're needed and it's not too late to serve God and help your community. See you soon!

Mother's Day 2026 was a time of celebrating the mothers, moms, aunties and grandmothers among the Hughes Memorial UMC family! We loved the mothers present and remembered those in heaven, by lighting candles before the altar! God has blessed us, every one!

Through the 2025 Holiday Season, members of Hughes Memorial UMC celebrated God's work in service, focusing on families lighting the Advent candles on our altar, and in celebrating education and service accomplishments of our teens. We sang the songs of Zion and in Christmas carols and praise and worship. We were blessed with a praise dance of Taryn Harris and the peaceful instrumentals of cellist Benajmin Gates.
As New Year 2026 approached, members celebrated in a midday New Year’s Eve Service where we shared testimonies, listed the 3 major worries we released ourselves of as 2025 closed, and 3 things we’ll work to reset ourselves spiritually in 2026. We sang hymns and afterwards fellowshipped with a meal of black-eyed peas cornbread and other treats.
As New Year 2026 begins, we hope you’ll join us in our sanctuary on Sundays at 10 am to get a closer walk with God with a congregation who serve Him and are thankful for the leadership of Pastor Reginald Tarpley and First Lady Debbie Tarpley!
