Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. are often remembered as opposites.

History is more complicated than that.

They disagreed deeply on strategy, language, nonviolence, and how Black Americans should respond to oppression. But beneath those disagreements was something both men understood: peace without freedom is not peace, and freedom without justice is incomplete.

Malcolm challenged America to stop demanding patience from people whose rights were being denied. King challenged America to understand that removing visible conflict was not enough. A quiet society can still be an unjust society.

One spoke relentlessly about freedom, dignity, and self determination. The other insisted that justice had to transform the moral foundation of the nation itself.

Different roads. Different methods. But both forced America to confront a truth it could no longer escape.

You cannot ask oppressed people to accept injustice in the name of peace.

Justice is what makes peace worth having.
