Highlights from our DC Easter Sunday included: cooking out, egg hunt, games, and a failed peeps s'mores attempt.
I guess Zach needs a refresher...
"First you take the graham, you stick the chocolate on the graham. Then you roast the 'mallow. When the 'mallows flaming... you stick it on the chocolate. Then cover with the other end. Then you scarf." ⚾️🍫🐣

Throwing it back to Holy Thursday, we were grateful to host a Seder meal at the DC house this year. Aside from Elizabeth it was everyone's first time partaking!

Happy Easter, everyone!
In KC we were blessed to take friends to Mass and host a big chaotic brunch afterwards on Easter Sunday (hence the lack of photos 😉). The brunch was a fun mixer of friends including two friends* we were able to connect this year who speak French.

Throughout the years it is amazing and a fun surprise to see the unique talents of different missionaries come to light.
As our French-speaking missionary, Elizabeth has become a great friend and facilitator to many who we wouldn't have as close a relationship otherwise!

Another was one we met through a long-time friend at our parish, St. Anthony's. We have since been getting to know them and have been helping give rides to Mass.

I think this may go down as our most epic book club of all time. We discussed 'Farmer Giles of Ham' by J.R.R. Tolkien this past fall and our friend Jim surprised us all with his full suit of armor!
He brought swords and showed the kids some sword fighting techniques.
We even had homemade "dragon's tail" for dessert -thanks to Faith and Kalani!
*No kids, animals, or even gaga ball pits were harmed during this book club.

After retreat every year we have a “super feast” in KC to reunite with past missionaries and friends of Simple House. This year was extra special because we celebrated Kalani’s farewell as she has decided to move back home closer to her family. The cherry on top of the celebration was her family surprised her at the party traveling from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida!!! 🚗✈️

Please keep Kalani in your prayers as she will be working with folks struggling with substance abuse as her new job.

Thank you, Conception Abbey for hosting us again for our annual retreat!
Whereas the majority of retreat is silent, a few talks* are interspersed throughout the week and dinners are free game to chat. One highlight of retreat is getting to reunite with the monks, seminarians, and staff that have been walking with A Simple House for a long time.
We look forward to our catch ups with Br. Luke, who was a missionary with us 2012-2013. The running joke is that he went on retreat and never left. 😉

Missionaries first met R in the park in 2021. We have been blessed to know him ever since. We have done countless things together...haircuts, clothes shopping, laundry, getting IDs and birth certificates and then replacing the ones that got stolen, going to Mass, celebrating holidays, Bible studies, and sharing many many meals together.
Our community tried other means to get him into housing but nothing else seemed to work until Just Homes provided one. We are so thankful for all the volunteers and donors who helped support Just Homes' mission to get another beautiful soul off the streets.
