A large group from the US Naval Academy, including the Catholic Midshipmen’s Club and the Catholic Choir, attended the annual Memorial Mass for Servant of God, Father Vincent Capodanno last night.

The Mass took place in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and marked the 59th anniversary of his death on a Vietnam battlefield as he scrambled, unarmed, to minister to outnumbered U.S. Marines.

Join us for the annual Memorial Mass for Father Vincent R. Capodanno, MM, Servant of God, will take place at 6:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Avenue in Northeast Washington.

His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, will be the principal celebrant and homilist.

Father Daniel L. Mode, CHC, CAPT, USN, a 38-year veteran Catholic U.S. Navy Chaplain who serves on active duty with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), has been awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious service.

Vice Admiral James P. Downey, outgoing commander of the U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), presented the award on Aug. 12 at command headquarters in the Navy Yard in Washington, DC.
