Meet our Diocese of Victoria in Texas seminarians! 👋

This is Nelson Lagos, studying at St. Mary's Seminary in Houston.

Here is his vocation story:

"I grew up in a very Catholic family in Honduras with a very devout grandmother who introduced me to the beauty of our faith. From a very young age I always wanted to be a priest. At the age of fourteen I began to seriously think about my faith and what my calling in life was. Through prayer, discernment, serving and volunteering in the church, I discovered that God was calling me to follow and serve Him in a deeper way. Let us pray for each other so that together, under the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, we respond to the call of our first vocation, which is heaven."

Pray for Nelson as he begins the academic year and continues to discern the priesthood! 🙏

The priesthood is a calling.

Christ asks of some men the sacrifice of their lives in following him as his more intimate companions. From all eternity, certain men are called to the priesthood. It is a call inscribed in their nature and because of this, is a call that will bring them fulfillment.

God bless our Diocese of Victoria in Texas priests!

Meet our Diocese of Victoria in Texas seminarians! 👋

Meet Alex Woods, currently in Configuration I at St. Mary's Seminary. Fun fact: Alex's birthday is next week, August 29th! 🎉

Here's his vocation story:

"I have always told people that I wanted to be a priest since I could talk. My parents are devout Catholics and were open to my desire. They taught me to pray the Rosary and go to Eucharistic Adoration regularly. It was through these devotions and their encouragement that I was able to discern God’s call. I spent 2 years working at a homeless shelter as a missionary in New York, but really missed my home state of Texas. After this time of service, I found the Lord calling me to diocesan life."

If I go to seminary does that mean I’m going to become a priest? If I enter a religious order, will I automatically become a nun for life?

No. This is time for further discernment. If you go to the convent and then start to feel unpeaceful, or think you want to date after all, you can leave. Simple as that. Same with seminary.

(By the way, most people, even if they leave, are very grateful for their time in formation. It’ll make you a better Catholic for the rest of your life!)

Meet our Diocese of Victoria in Texas seminarians!

Meet William Pettus, who is in Configuration III, studying at St. Mary's seminary:

"Growing in Hallettsville, attending Sacred Heart Catholic School, I was immensely blessed with a strong and supportive Sacred Heart Parish Family. Throughout much of my youth, I had desired to be an ordinary person, to get married, have children and live a regular life, but something deep within me knew that God had desired for me to do something different concerning my life. During my time attending Texas A&M University I became quite involved with a Christian men’s organization that held weekly Bible studies and weekend hunting/fishing trips. I also was privileged to serve in Saint Mary’s Catholic Center’s Home Group Ministry. As I grew in my faith, the tug of my heart by God to seminary became evident and undeniable. After much prayer, and the Holy Spirit’s fruit of peace I am thankful to be in priestly formation at Holy Trinity Seminary with my brothers. Know of our prayers for you."

“He who gives his will to God, gives Him everything.”

Join us in praying the final day of the St. John Vianney Novena! 🙏

St. John Vianney, from a young age you had a great devotion to our Blessed Mother, relying constantly on her intercession. In doing so you recognized Mary as your mother and realized that through your devotion to Mary you in turn gave full devotion to Her Son. Help our priests become devoted to our Blessed Mother and encourage active devotion to her by all the faithful.

Encourage those who are discerning to also accept Mary as their mother and seek her intercession. As Christ entrusted Mary to be the Mother of the Church, let all priest and those discerning receive Mary as their Mother and fly unto her protection in times of need.

Believing in the power of your kind intercession, we humbly ask you to pray for us and the special intention we are hoping God will grant us through this novena (here mention your special intention).

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

St. John Vianney, in your great devotion to Christ, you imitated the great example of the beloved disciple and reclined your heart next to the Heart of Christ. Help our priests and those discerning grow in the knowledge that the priesthood is indeed the love of the heart of Jesus. Help them to grow in knowledge of the mercy of His most Sacred Heart and give them the grace to remain in Him. Help our priests be like Christ to the members of the Church and to likewise inspire them to grow in love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Believing in the power of your kind intercession, we humbly ask you to pray for us and the special intention we are hoping God will grant us through this novena (here mention your special intention).

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.
