The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (historically known as Corpus Christi) is a major Catholic feast honoring the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It highlights the transformation of bread and wine into Christ’s body and blood.

What the Feast MeansThe Eucharist: Catholics believe the Eucharist is the "source and summit of the Christian life". The solemnity provides a focused time to celebrate and give thanks for this gift.

Transubstantiation: The Church teaches that during Mass, the bread and wine literally and substantially become the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ.

Connection to the Last Supper: While the institution of the Eucharist is commemorated on Holy Thursday, this feast allows for a joyful public celebration free from the somber tone of Holy Week.

Origins and TraditionsHistory: The feast originated in the 13th century, prompted by the visions of St. Juliana of Mt. Cornillon and a famous Eucharistic miracle in Bolsena, Italy. It was extended to the universal Church in 1264 by Pope Urban IV, who tasked St. Thomas Aquinas with composing the liturgical texts.
